Race:1 (322) PATERSON HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1650 m

COURT RULER shifted in at the start and bumped HORSE BULLET.
DOCTORS DELIGHT was bumped at the start by THE HAPPY BUNCH which was taken out by HAPPY HAPPY. DOCTORS DELIGHT then shifted out, resulting in GOLDEN CANNON being crowded for room inside GLORIAM. After this, GOLDEN CANNON was shifted across behind runners.
ENJOYABLE SUCCESS was slow to begin and shortly after the start was shifted across behind runners.
HAPPY HAPPY travelled keenly in the middle stages.
Rounding the Home Turn, HORSE BULLET got its head on the side and lay out.
Passing the 300 Metres, GOLDEN CANNON and DOCTORS DELIGHT raced tight as GOLDEN CANNON attempted to shift to the outside of GLORIAM to obtain clear running. When unable to shift out at this stage, GOLDEN CANNON was then shifted to the inside of GLORIAM to continue improving.
Passing the 150 Metres, HORSE BULLET was steadied away from the heels of GOLDEN CANNON (C Y Ho) which shifted in. C Y Ho was advised to exercise more care.
After the race, Z Purton was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of KWAICHUNG BROTHERS. He said from the outside barrier he shifted the horse across behind runners and it was ridden in a similar manner to its last start when successful. He said unlike that occasion, KWAICHUNG BROTHERS did not finish off the race tonight. A veterinary inspection of KWAICHUNG BROTHERS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of KWAICHUNG BROTHERS, a last start winner and which finished towards the rear of the field, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, KWAICHUNG BROTHERS will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of DOCTORS DELIGHT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
DOCTORS DELIGHT, SPINNING DANCER, GLORIAM and GOLDEN CANNON were sent for sampling.

Race:2 (323) GREAT GEORGE HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1000 m

TOM’S DRAGON and STRIKING MR C were crowded for room on jumping between MULTIMAX and LIGHTNING STEED (Z Purton) which shifted out. Z Purton was advised to ensure that he makes every endeavour to straighten his mounts in similar circumstances. In this incident, MULTIMAX became badly unbalanced after being bumped on the hindquarters by STRIKING MR C.
LIGHTNING TREASURE, which was fractious in the barriers, began very awkwardly, resulting in its rider, C Y Ho, becoming unbalanced and LIGHTNING TREASURE losing ground.
VERY SWEET ORANGE began awkwardly.
When being steadied from the outside barrier to be shifted across behind runners, FLYING FORCE was awkwardly placed outside PLANET NICCONI shortly after the start.
Approaching the 900 Metres, MULTIMAX and STRIKING MR C bumped.
After the 800 Metres, when being ridden along, MULTIMAX got its head on the side and shifted out.
Making the turn approaching the 500 Metres, VIGOROUS SPIRIT got its head on the side and lay out. VIGOROUS SPIRIT then continued to lay out rounding the Home Turn and near the 250 Metres was bumped by MULTIMAX which shifted out.
After the 300 Metres, STRATHALLAN and VERY SWEET ORANGE raced tight.
Approaching the 100 Metres, LIGHTNING STEED was momentarily awkwardly placed outside the heels of VERY SWEET ORANGE which shifted out marginally.
Close to the finishing line, LIGHTNING STEED was steadied away from the heels of LIGHTNING TREASURE (C Y Ho) which shifted in when not properly clear. C Y Ho was reprimanded.
Throughout the race, PLANET NICCONI travelled wide and without cover.
A veterinary inspection of STRIKING MR C immediately following the race confirmed the horse to be a "roarer” which had previously been reported.
TOM’S DRAGON, STRATHALLAN and LIGHTNING TREASURE were sent for sampling.

Race:3 (324) KINGSTON HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1200 m

CAPTAIN BOSS was withdrawn on 8.1.19 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (respiratory infection) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter WAH MAY PRINCESS (K Teetan). Before being allowed to race again, CAPTAIN BOSS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Shortly after the start, DOMINATOR raced tight between HAPPY COOPERATION and GOOD COMPANION which was taken in by EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE which got its head on the side and shifted in away from WAH MAY PRINCESS.
Also shortly after the start, SUPER LUCKY and HAPPY COOPERATION bumped.
From the outside barriers, MISCHIEVOUS SUNDAE and LONDON MASTER were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Near the 850 Metres, DOMINATOR raced tight between ALL GREAT FRIENDS which was taken out marginally by SPLIT OF A SECOND and WAH MAY PRINCESS which shifted in before being directed back out by its rider.
Near the 750 Metres, SUPER LUCKY got its head up when momentarily awkwardly placed close to the heels of SHARPMIND.
Near the 700 Metres, ALL GREAT FRIENDS was left racing wide and without cover.
Passing the 300 Metres, LONDON MASTER was shifted to the inside of MISCHIEVOUS SUNDAE after being disappointed for running outside that horse which shifted out away from the heels of HAPPY COOPERATION. After being shifted to the inside of MISCHIEVOUS SUNDAE, LONDON MASTER was then shifted out away from the heels of HAPPY COOPERATION near the 250 Metres as that horse commenced to give ground.
Close to the finishing line, ALL GREAT FRIENDS was awkwardly placed outside the heels of GOOD COMPANION.
For the majority of the race, WAH MAY PRINCESS travelled very wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground.
After the race, U Rispoli stated that although JIMSON THE DRAGON had barrier trialed at Happy Valley, he believed that the horse’s disappointing performance could be attributed to it racing for the first time at this venue. He added that, in his opinion, JIMSON THE DRAGON may not have been suited by having to be ridden hard in the early stages to take up a forward position from its favourable barrier as instructed. A veterinary inspection of JIMSON THE DRAGON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of HAPPY COOPERATION immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SUPER LUCKY and MISCHIEVOUS SUNDAE were sent for sampling.

Race:4 (325) CAUSEWAY HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1000 m

CALIFORNIA GUNGHO was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (allergic response). Before being allowed to race again, CALIFORNIA GUNGHO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
The Stewards tonight interviewed Trainer W Y So regarding PRINCE HARMONY (V12) being a pre-declaration withdrawal from this race due to being inadvertently treated. Also interviewed was Mr C K Chung, assistant trainer allocated to Mr So’s stable for the current racing season. PRINCE HARMONY was withdrawn from this race on Sunday, 6 January 2019. Mr So was fined the sum of $10,000 for breaching Rule 50(2) in that as the trainer of PRINCE HARMONY, he did fail in his responsibility for all matters pertaining to the running of his stable which resulted in PRINCE HARMONY being inadvertently treated with dexamethasone on Friday, 4 January 2019 which necessitated the withdrawal of the horse from this race. Mr Chung was advised that a report would be forwarded to Stables Management regarding his role in this matter.
BEAUTY TIME stood flat-footed as the start was effected and consequently lost a considerable amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, BEAUTY TIME will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial.
GOKO began awkwardly, shifted out and hampered SHINING GEM.
FORZA ANGEL shifted in at the start and bumped the hindquarters of E-SUPER.
DEMONS ROCK began very awkwardly, resulting in its rider, C Y Ho, losing the use of his left stirrup iron shortly after the start and causing him to become badly unbalanced. C Y Ho was able to regain the use of his stirrup iron near the 900 Metres.
Shortly after the start, MOST BEAUTIFUL was bumped by FLYING BONUS which was awkwardly placed outside SPECIAL STARS which shifted out.
Making the turn near the 550 Metres, E-SUPER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FLYING BONUS.
Passing the 100 Metres, K Teetan (MEGA HEART) dropped his whip.
For the majority of the race, GOKO travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, A Badel stated that he was instructed that he could lead on E-SUPER if he did not have to make too much use of the horse or alternatively it was acceptable for him to take a trailing position behind the leaders if other riders were intent on leading. He said E-SUPER began well and he commenced to shift across to obtain a prominent position and observed that FLYING BONUS was being aggressively ridden from an inside barrier to obtain a forward position. He said he had anticipated that that horse would be ridden to lead and that SPECIAL STARS may obtain a trailing position, however, SPECIAL STARS showed more speed than he expected in the early stages which resulted in FLYING BONUS not being able to cross that horse and sharing the lead with SPECIAL STARS. He said as he would have had to ride his mount along to clear those horses to lead, he elected to obtain a trailing position behind FLYING BONUS.
After the race, FORZA ANGEL was noted to have sustained an overreach wound to the right front leg.
A veterinary inspection of FLYING BONUS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SPECIAL STARS and MOST BEAUTIFUL were sent for sampling.

Race:5 (326) MORETON HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1650 m

When being steadied to be shifted across behind runners from a wide barrier, THE SYLPH was bumped by JOLLY CONVERGENCE which shifted in. THE SYLPH then shifted in and bumped OPEN HOUSE.
C Y Ho (UNIVERSAL GO GO) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the winning post on the first occasion he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of JOLLY CONVERGENCE, resulting in that horse being directed in onto CHAPARRAL STAR which in turn was taken in and causing both SPRING WIN and CHARITY GRAND to be unnecessarily crowded for room and to be hampered. TEN FLAMES, which was following SPRING WIN, was shifted out away from the heels of that horse, resulting in OPEN HOUSE being taken wider and causing THE SYLPH, which was travelling keenly, being inconvenienced. THE SYLPH then got its head up for some distance after this as the horse was steadied to obtain cover behind OPEN HOUSE. C Y Ho was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 30 January 2019 and to expire on Sunday, 3 February 2019 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In addition, C Y Ho was fined $15,000.
After passing the winning post on the first occasion, JOLLY CONVERGENCE was left racing wide and without cover.
Passing the 600 Metres, CHAPARRAL STAR raced tight between JOLLY CONVERGENCE and CHARITY GRAND.
Passing the 300 Metres, SPRING WIN was shifted to the outside of CHAPARRAL STAR to obtain clear running.
When questioned, K Teetan stated that on jumping OPEN HOUSE made contact with the outside gate which resulted in his left foot being jammed. He said because of this he had a number of looks down to his left shortly after the start.
When questioned, S de Sousa (HAPPY WARRIOR) stated that after racing behind UNIVERSAL GO GO in the early and middle stages, he felt that the tempo of the race was not strong after the 900 Metres and he was concerned that both SPARKLING SWORD and UNIVERSAL GO GO, the front runners of the race, would have an advantage if the race continued to be run slowly and which would be to the detriment to HAPPY WARRIOR. He said he therefore elected to shift his mount to the outside of UNIVERSAL GO GO at the 800 Metres in order to make a forward move around that horse. He said however as he moved HAPPY WARRIOR out, the tempo of the race then increased which would have required him to make too much use of the horse to continue forward. He said as he improved to the outside of the hindquarters of UNIVERSAL GO GO, it was then not available for him to shift back in behind that horse and this resulted in HAPPY WARRIOR racing three wide and without cover after the 800 Metres.
A veterinary inspection of OPEN HOUSE immediately following the race revealed the horse to be displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Before being allowed to race again, OPEN HOUSE will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of CHAPARRAL STAR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
UNIVERSAL GO GO and HAPPY WARRIOR were sent for sampling.

Race:6 (327) THE JANUARY CUP (HANDICAP) (Sec1) Group Three 1800 m

S de Sousa was found guilty of a breach of Stewards Instruction 22(3) in that he used his whip in an inappropriate manner on EAGLE WAY during that horse’s preliminary. S de Sousa was fined the sum of $10,000.
GOLD MOUNT and DINOZZO bumped shortly after the start.
From a wide barrier, CITRON SPIRIT was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
A Badel (SIMPLY BRILLIANT) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that for some distance after the start he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of EAGLE WAY, resulting in that horse, NORTHERN SUPERSTAR and SOUTHERN LEGEND receiving significant crowding and ultimately causing SOUTHERN LEGEND to lose its rightful running when checked away from the heels of HORSE OF FORTUNE approaching the 1700 Metres. A Badel was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 16 January 2019 and to expire on Monday, 21 January 2019 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In addition, A Badel was fined 25,000.
CITRON SPIRIT was badly held up for a run in the early part of the Straight and near the 250 Metres was shifted to the outside of DINOZZO to obtain clear running.
GOLD MOUNT was also held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight and near the 250 Metres was disappointed for a run between EAGLE WAY which was racing tight outside HORSE OF FORTUNE and SOUTHERN LEGEND.
After passing the winning post, at the conclusion of the race, SIMPLY BRILLIANT stumbled badly, resulting in its rider, A Badel, being dislodged. A Badel was subsequently examined by the Chief Medical Officer who reported that he was unfit to fulfil his remaining race riding engagement. After this incident, Officials inspected the relevant section of the track and found that, apart from one noticeable divot, the remainder of the racing surface in the relevant area was consistent with other sections of the track approaching and after this area. After remedial work was carried out on this one divot, the relevant section of the track was inspected by the Stewards and found to be suitable for racing.
When questioned, S de Sousa stated that in discussions with Mr J Moore, the trainer of EAGLE WAY, it was felt that TIME WARP would be able to dictate the tempo of the race as it was not anticipated that another horse would be able to show sufficient speed to pressure that horse in the early and middle stages. He said it was therefore felt that if EAGLE WAY were to be able to obtain a position in about midfield, this would provide EAGLE WAY with the opportunity to be positioned closer to TIME WARP so that the horse would have not too much ground to make up in the latter stages of the race. He said after being crowded for room for some distance after the start, he was left racing wide and he steadied his mount in an attempt to obtain a trailing position behind NORTHERN SUPERSTAR. He said after obtaining that position, he was unable to shift in further as SOUTHERN LEGEND had obtained the position one horse off the rail inside EAGLE WAY. He said after NORTHERN SUPERSTAR was able to shift in to a position one horse off the rail near the 1200 Metres, this resulted in EAGLE WAY being left racing in a three wide position without cover. He added it was not available for him to steady EAGLE WAY to shift in to race behind SOUTHERN LEGEND at this time as he would have had to unnecessarily restrain the horse and consequently EAGLE WAY was left racing three wide and without cover for the remainder of the race. A veterinary inspection of EAGLE WAY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of NORTHERN SUPERSTAR and SIMPLY BRILLIANT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
TIME WARP, SIMPLY BRILLIANT and CITRON SPIRIT were sent for sampling.

Race:7 (328) CLEVELAND HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1650 m

As the start was effected, LOOKING GOOD lifted its front feet off the ground and lost ground.
WONDERFUL JOURNEY was crowded for room on jumping between GOD OF DRAGON and MY ALLY which shifted out. After this, WONDERFUL JOURNEY and GOD OF DRAGON were shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion, ARCADA became unbalanced when very awkwardly placed close to the heels of IRISH VEGA. ARCADA subsequently travelled wide and without cover.
Approaching the 600 Metres, IRISH VEGA raced tight between ARCADA and MY ALLY which shifted out marginally.
Near the 250 Metres, PERFECT GLORY raced in restricted room inside MY ALLY when improving into tight running inside that horse.
HAR HAR HEART lost its right front plate after the race.
A veterinary inspection of PERFECT GLORY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of LOOKING GOOD immediately following the race revealed the horse to be displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Before being allowed to race again, LOOKING GOOD will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
PERFECT GLORY, RACING LUCK and HAR HAR HEART were sent for sampling.

Race:8 (329) CANNON HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 2 1200 m

JADE THEATRE was withdrawn on 8.1.19 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter LIMITLESS (S de Sousa). Before being allowed to race again, JADE THEATRE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
C Y Ho (SUPER TURBO) was fined the sum of $3,000 for initially weighing out without a girth and surcingle which required his saddle to be returned from the saddling area in order for him to be re-weighed.
MOMENT OF POWER shifted out at the start and inconvenienced STARLIGHT.
SAUL’S SPECIAL and TELECOM BROTHERS bumped shortly after the start.
From the outside barriers, SUPER TURBO, LIMITLESS and KEEP MOVING were all shifted across behind runners shortly after the start.
COUNTRY STAR travelled keenly in the early and middle stages.
Near the 850 Metres, SUPER HOPPY was momentarily awkwardly placed inside the heels of SAUL’S SPECIAL which was then shifted out and ridden along to clear SUPER HOPPY.
Passing the 850 Metres, LIMITLESS got its head on the side and shifted in away from KEEP MOVING and consequently was very awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOLD WIN.
Near the 50 Metres, FANTASTIC FEELING was steadied when disappointed for running between STORM SIGNAL and TELECOM BROTHERS, both of which shifted ground marginally. This resulted in FANTASTIC FEELING being awkwardly placed close to the heels of STORM SIGNAL over the concluding stages and consequently was not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race.
Passing the winning post, TELECOM BROTHERS shifted in and was checked away from the heels of STORM SIGNAL.
A veterinary inspection of LIMITLESS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
COUNTRY STAR and SUPER HOPPY were sent for sampling.
