Race: 4 (430)LUCKY STAR HANDICAP (Sec2)Class 41200 m
After being loaded into the barriers, EXHILARATING TIME became very fractious and got down in the barriers before getting out under the front gates. In this incident, the saddle on EXHILARATING TIME shifted back considerably, resulting in the horse bucking for a considerable distance when riderless and completing a circuit of the course. Acting on veterinary advice that EXHILARATING TIME was not suitable to start, the horse was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. As EXHILARATING TIME was favourite for the race, all horses were removed from the barriers and the starting time of the race delayed. When being removed from the barriers, HONEST WAY became fractious, resulting in T Berry being dislodged. T Berry was examined by the Club’s Racing Medical Officer positioned at the Start and passed fit to ride. Before being allowed to race again, EXHILARATING TIME will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that EXHILARATING TIME had sustained minor wounds to both front feet and had lost its left front plate.
XIANG HUANG QI shifted out at the start and bumped SILVER FIG.
NOBLE STAR shifted in abruptly at the start and bumped HORSE BULLET which lost ground.
RESPECT began only fairly.
From a wide barrier, LONDON MASTER was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
After the 800 Metres, MAGIC SUCCESS, which was wearing blinkers for the first time today, commenced to prove very difficult to settle and near the 700 Metres got its head up when being severely checked away from the heels of SILVER FIG. MAGIC SUCCESS continued to prove very difficult to settle and near the 600 Metres again got its head up when again being restrained away from the heels of SILVER FIG. Whilst the Stewards were aware that the tempo of the race did slacken in the middle stages, having regard to the reaction of all other horses and their relative positioning at the relevant stage, they did not consider that the slackening of the pace was the primary reason for the incident involving MAGIC SUCCESS and therefore no further action was taken. When MAGIC SUCCESS was checked away from the heels of SILVER FIG near the 700 Metres, it shifted out, resulting in SHANGHAI DRAGON being hampered and taken wider. Then near the 650 Metres, SHANGHAI DRAGON shifted back in and bumped MAGIC SUCCESS.
Approaching the 700 Metres, SILVER FIG and NICE KICK bumped.
Passing the 500 Metres, NOBLE STAR and RESPECT bumped due to RESPECT laying out. NOBLE STAR then shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of NICE KICK which shifted in marginally. This resulted in NICE KICK becoming badly unbalanced and shifting in abruptly, causing NOBLE STAR to also become badly unbalanced when crowded for room between NICE KICK and RESPECT. As the Stewards were satisfied that there was no rider error involved in this incident, no further action was taken.
Rounding the Home Turn, SHANGHAI DRAGON and MAGIC SUCCESS raced tight as MAGIC SUCCESS shifted out to obtain clear running.
Near the 250 Metres, NICE KICK was brushed by MAGIC SUCCESS which was racing tight inside SHANGHAI DRAGON.
At the 200 Metres, RESPECT was bumped by NOBLE STAR which got its head on the side and lay in.
P-C Boudot (SHANGHAI DRAGON) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching and passing the 100 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of MAGIC SUCCESS, causing that horse to be unnecessarily crowded for room and taken in onto NICE KICK which became unbalanced after being bumped by MAGIC SUCCESS. P-C Boudot was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday, 25 February 2018 and to expire on Thursday, 1 March 2018 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In addition, Jockey Boudot was fined $7,500.
When questioned, T Berry stated that HONEST WAY, which was having its first race start today, took some time in the early part of the Straight to gather momentum. He said passing the 200 Metres HONEST WAY was closing off the race strongly and he intended to improve into clear running between SILVER FIG and SHANGHAI DRAGON as there was comfortable room to improve between those horses. He said however passing the 200 Metres SILVER FIG commenced to drift in and as he felt that that horse would likely continue to drift in, he committed HONEST WAY, which is a long striding horse, to the outside of SILVER FIG. He said as soon as he committed to shift to the outside of SILVER FIG, SHANGHAI DRAGON, which was racing inside that horse, also drifted in which resulted in the run remaining available, however, at this time he had already made the decision to shift to the outside of SILVER FIG. He added for the remainder of the race SILVER FIG continued to lay in under pressure and shift ground and he felt that at the time the best option to obtain unimpeded running was to shift to the outside of that horse. After viewing the videos, T Berry’s explanation was accepted.
Following the race, A Sanna expressed concern regarding the action of NOBLE STAR. A veterinary inspection of NOBLE STAR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
MAGIC SUCCESS, SILVER FIG and HONEST WAY were sent for sampling.
<20/2/2018 Additional Veterinary Report>NOBLE STAR, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. NOBLE STAR was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C S Shum yesterday morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, NOBLE STAR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Race: 5 (431)LUCKY STAR HANDICAP (Sec1)Class 41200 m
SUPER EURO STAR shifted in at the start, resulting in SPLIT OF A SECOND being crowded onto RAGING STORM which became unbalanced after being bumped by SPLIT OF A SECOND.
From wide barriers, DESTIN and FORTUNE WAY were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Also from a wide barrier, LEISURED FEET was shifted across behind runners in the early stages and after travelling keenly for some distance approaching and passing the 1000 Metres was then left racing wide and without cover.
Passing the 1100 Metres, SPLIT OF A SECOND got its head up when being shifted in behind RAGING STORM which shifted out.
Near the 950 Metres, ALL YOU NEED got its head up when being checked away from the heels of MULTIMAX.
After the 750 Metres, PLEASANT GUY was taken into a position wide and without cover by LUCKY TWINKLE STAR which shifted out to follow ALL YOU NEED which also raced wide and without cover throughout the race.
Approaching and passing the 700 Metres, SPEEDY KING was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MULTIMAX.
Rounding the Home Turn, LEISURED FEET raced tight outside DESTIN which shifted out to obtain clear running.
DESTIN was held up for clear running from on straightening until passing the 300 Metres.
After the 200 Metres, SPLIT OF A SECOND was somewhat reluctant to shift to the outside of SPEEDY KING to obtain clear running. After being shifted to the outside of SPEEDY KING, SPLIT OF A SECOND brushed HAVE FUN TOGETHER.
Approaching the 100 Metres, PLEASANT GUY and LUCKY TWINKLE STAR were hampered by RAGING STORM (J Moreira) which shifted out when not quite clear. J Moreira was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
For some distance after the 100 Metres, SPLIT OF A SECOND got its head on the side and lay in behind SPEEDY KING when racing tight inside HAVE FUN TOGETHER.
Over the concluding stages, FIRE AND GOLD raced tight between SPEEDY KING and ALL YOU NEED, both of which shifted a minimal amount of ground. As a consequence, FIRE AND GOLD was not able to be properly tested over the final 25 Metres.
When questioned, J Moreira stated that RAGING STORM, which was having its first race start today, began satisfactorily, however, despite being hard ridden in the early stages, did not show any early speed and settled further back in the field than had been hoped. He said after the 1100 Metres he was racing outside HAVE FUN TOGETHER and as he was racing wide, he shifted RAGING STORM across to race behind that horse. He said when he did this RAGING STORM was reluctant to maintain its position and he had to ride his mount aggressively including slapping the horse down the shoulder with the whip. He said in the middle stages RAGING STORM raced greenly and he had to continually ride his mount along. He said, despite being ridden along, RAGING STORM would not hold its position behind HAVE FUN TOGETHER which resulted in him racing towards the tail of the field passing the 800 Metres. He added passing the 600 Metres he felt he would have had to shift his mount considerably wider to the outside of horses and therefore he elected to try and improve inside runners rounding the Home Turn. He said passing the 550 Metres he attempted to improve between HAVE FUN TOGETHER and SPLIT OF A SECOND, however, his mount did not improve quickly enough to prevent SPLIT OF A SECOND from shifting out and taking the run that he had intended to obtain. He said RAGING STORM continued to race greenly and shifted ground on a number of occasions in the Straight. He said he was held up for clear running passing the 200 Metres and after being shifted to the outside of HAVE FUN TOGETHER passing the 150 Metres to obtain clear running RAGING STORM then closed off the race strongly.
A veterinary inspection of LUCKY TWINKLE STAR and PLEASANT GUY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, LUCKY TWINKLE STAR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
RAGING STORM, SPEEDY KING and HAVE FUN TOGETHER were sent for sampling.

Passing the 400 Metres, CHAMPION PRIDE was bumped by HAIR TRIGGER which shifted in to obtain clear running.
Passing the 300 Metres, MONEY BOY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MASSIVE POCKET when initially disappointed for running between that horse and CIRCUIT KING which shifted out. MONEY BOY was then awkwardly placed close to the heels of MASSIVE POCKET for some distance before being shifted to the inside of that horse passing the 200 Metres into tight running between MASSIVE POCKET and CIRCUIT KING. In this incident, MONEY BOY and CIRCUIT KING made contact.
Approaching the 100 Metres, FLYING LOVER was held up for clear running behind MONEY BOY. When awkwardly placed behind MONEY BOY, FLYING LOVER shifted in and inconvenienced CIRCUIT KING.
When questioned, Apprentice H T Mo stated that he was asked to attempt to lead on BALTIC WHISPER from an inside barrier if the horse showed the same type of natural speed that it did at its first and only start when successful. He said he was also asked if BALTIC WHISPER did not have sufficient speed to cross runners to its outside, he should attempt to find cover on the horse before producing it into clear running at the 400 Metres to finish off its race. He said, despite being ridden along in the early stages, BALTIC WHISPER did not have sufficient speed to clear MR LUMIERES to its outside and therefore after the 900 Metres he ceased riding his mount along and steadied BALTIC WHISPER to obtain cover behind MR LUMIERES.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MASTER ALBERT, J Moreira stated that his mount travelled strongly in the early and middle stages on the lead. He said approaching the 400 Metres he commenced to ride his mount along in the expectation that it would finish off the race given how well it had travelled, however, MASTER ALBERT immediately came under heavy pressure and then, despite being fully tested, commenced to give ground after the 300 Metres. He added approaching the 200 Metres MASTER ALBERT shifted in abruptly and then, despite being ridden along, weakened noticeably over the latter stages of the race. He said as MASTER ALBERT travelled strongly in the early stages, he did recommend to connections that they consider removing blinkers from the horse in the hope that it would be able to travel such that it is able to finish off its races. A veterinary inspection of MASTER ALBERT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of MASSIVE POCKET immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, MASSIVE POCKET will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

T Berry (HELENE CHARISMA) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that at the 1300 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of VICTORY BOYS, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. T Berry was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Saturday, 3 March 2018 and to expire on Thursday, 8 March 2018 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). Although the Rules of Racing provide that a 4th placegetter cannot be declared a non-runner due to an incident at the start, prior to the declaration of weighed-in, the Stewards interviewed J Moreira regarding NOTHINGILIKEMORE’s start in the race. J Moreira stated that as the start was effected NOTHINGILIKEMORE put its head down of its own accord which resulted in the horse being slow to begin. After viewing the videos, the Stewards were completely satisfied that NOTHINGILIKEMORE, which was being assisted by a starting gate handler, got its head down and that no external influence played any part in the horse being slow to begin.
GOLDFIELD began awkwardly.
