Firm favourites for Magic Night Stakes and Pago Pago Stakes at Rosehill

The two $175,000, Group 3 two-year-old races at Rosehill on Saturday have fields of 13 fillies and 14 colts respectively for the Canadian Club Magic Night Stakes (1200m) for fillies and Café Culture + Insitu Pago Pago Stakes (1200m).

The winners of each race are exempt from a ballot for the $3.5m, Group 1 Longines Golden Slipper (1200m) on the 24th.

The fillies race first at 1.30pm in the Magic Night Stakes with the Golden Slipper favourite Sunlight drawing mid-field on barrier nine for Luke Currie.

Rivals in the Magic Night Stakes, Setsuna and Into The Abyss, have drawn barriers 10 and 13 for jockeys Stephen Baster and Christian Reith respectively.

The Tony McEvoy trained Zoustar filly Sunlight is already exempt from a Slipper ballot after her win over Estijaab, also exempt, in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes over 1100m at Rosehill on February 24th. The strongly built filly is four from four this campaign and while the win in the Silver Slipper was narrow it was dominant.

Sunlight went to the top of the Slipper market after the Silver Slipper Stakes win and after Estijaab’s long neck win over Pure Elation last Saturday in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes over 1200m at Randwick she firmed further into $4.00.

The filly has opened with TAB.com.au at $1.50 for Saturday’s race with Setsuna, Into The Abyss and Lilith at $13.00.

The colts follow at 2.10pm in the Pago Pago Stakes with Written By drawing well in barrier four for Jordon Childs.

Grahame Begg’s a colt, by Written Tycoon who Begg also trained, is not exempt for the Slipper courtesy of his 2 1/4L win in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield, but at current sixth on the order of entry he runs on the 24th.

His presence makes it hard for the rest to gain the field exemption. Rivals Spin has barrier two, Sandbar barrier six, Zousain barrier 10 and Roosevelt barrier 3 for Tye Angland.

The opening market with TAB.com.au for Saturday has Written By at $2.00, Spin at $6.00 and the rest $12.00 and over.

The Rosehill track is currently rated a Soft 7 after 7mm of rain over the past 24 hours and 21mm for the last seven days. The rail will be in the true position for Saturday.

Sydney’s weather remains warm with showers forecast for Friday. Thursday’s forecast is for a partly cloudy day and 31c. Friday’s forecast is for a cloudy day, a medium (40%) chance of showers with 0mm-1mm and 30c and Saturday is partly cloudy with 18c – 33c.
