Murwillumbah-based trainer Matthew Dunn left his mark on another Saturday metropolitan program in Sydney when The Fire Trap (by Sizzling) won the $100,000, Australian Turf Club 2YO Handicap over 1400 metres which opened this weekend’s card at Rosehill Gardens.

A two-time winner in Queensland before making the lengthy trip down from the far north coast of New South Wales, The Fire Trap faced seven opponents from prominent Sydney stables yet proved to be a cut above his rivals with an impressive victory carrying top-weight of 58kg.
Best to jump in the contest, The Fire Trap was asked to settle in third position by his first-time partner Hugh Bowman and was always traveling well within himself until the top of the straight.
Once asked to mount a challenge and claim the race, the strapping son of first season sire Sizzling gradually reigned in the leaders before coasting to victory over the final 50 metres of the assignment.
The Fire Trap ultimately scored by a three-quarter length winning margin from Master Ash (by Sebring), with Laburnum (by Denman) finishing third a head in arrears of the runner-up.
Starting prices of the trio were $4.40, $3.90 favourite and $4.40, with the winner recording an overall race time of 1m25.01s (last 600m in 34.41s).
The Fire Trap now boasts a race record of three wins from four starts and $166,375 in total earnings. The progressive youngster races for a group of owners that comprises Mrs K L Dunn, Mr K R Palmer, Mr L Polglase, Mr C M Keegan, Geraghty Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Mr B W Cheyne, Kirra Beach, Pistons Punters Club No 2 and Mr J Paine.
The relentless progress of Matthew Dunn’s stable at Murwillumbah is one of the most notable success stories of the Australian training ranks.
The outfit’s profile has continually grown over the past handful of seasons and is on the threshold of sending out a century of winners in NSW and Queensland in 2017/18 alone.
Significantly, half of those successes have been in metropolitan Brisbane and Sydney events.
