The Australian Turf Club received 14 nominations on Monday for the first Group 1 of the 2019/20 season in the $500,000, WFA Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Godolphin have nominated both Alizee and Avilius (GB) with the former unlikely to start after her first up win in the Group 2 Missile Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill on August 10th. The latter though has opened as the $3.50 favourite with TAB.com.au for his opening round for spring.
Avilius imperiously won a Group and Listed trial over 1000m on the Course Proper at Rosehill on August 6th. The six-year-old Pivotal gelding was settled back in sixth by Blake Shinn and they then made progressive progress around the outside of the seven strong field to pick up the leaders for a 1/2L win. Avilius was not pressed to achieve the result.
Avilius resumes after a stellar autumn which culminated in two Group 1 victories in success with the Ranvet Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill and a week later the Tancred Stakes over 2400m. From just 18 starts he has won 10 and placed three times earning stakes of $2.4 million.
The All In market has Alizee and Verry Elleegant at $4.50, Happy Clapper at $6.00, Sesar at $8.00, Invincible Gem and Unforgotten at $11.00 with the rest $15.00 and over.
There are 14 nominations for the $200,000, Group 2 Darley Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m); 19 for the $160,000, Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m); 21 for the $160,000, Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1100m) and 12 for the $160,000, Up And Coming Stakes (1300m).
The Randwick track is rated a Good 4 on Monday after 9mm of irrigation over the last seven days. The rail will be out 4m for the entire circuit.
Sydney’s weather this week is partly cloudy through to Friday with temperatures from 20c to 21c. Saturday is forecast to be mostly sunny with 8c – 23c.
