Four Everest slot holders in The Shorts

The field of nine for the $200,000, Group 2 Bowermans Office Furniture Shorts (1100m) at Randwick on Saturday is the start of the serious preliminaries for the riches of the $10m, The Everest (1200m) with four of the field, Chautauqua, Redzel, Fell Swoop and English having confirmed slots for the October 14th spectacle.

The confirmation of the Snowden trained Redzel’s slot came on Tuesday when managing owners Triple Crown combined with James Harron Bloodstock to use the latter’s slot for the race.

Chautauqua has the slot of Greg Ingham, She Will Reign has Yu Lonf Investment’s slot, Fell Swoop has the Inglis slot and English the Tabcorp slot.

The Hawkes’ trained Chautauqua is the current $4.60 market favourite for The Everest. The seven-year-old Encosta de Lago gelding was last seen when storming down the outside of the Randwick track on April 1st to win the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes over 1200m. He has been prepared to resume with two trials, the last for a fifth over 1020m at Rosehill on September 4th.

English, a five-year-old mare also by Encosta de Lago, was second in the TJ Smith Stakes. The Waterhouse and Bott stable then sent her to the Group 1 All Aged Stakes over 1400m for a sixth and a further sixth in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes over 1200m at Morphettville on May 6th. She too has trialled twice, the last for a second over 1000m at Randwick on August 31st.

Canberra trained Fell Swoop completed the trifecta in the TJ Smith Stakes. Trainer Matthew Dale sent him to Brisbane for the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 over 1200m afterwards, but the six-year-old Not A Single Doubt gelding was ninth. He has trialled twice as well, the last for a third over 900m at Rosehill on September 4th.

Redzel demolished the field in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes over 1000m at Randwick on September 2nd in race record time and home in 32.91 for the final 600m. The Australian Turf Club have shortlisted Redzel for their slot. The Snowden trained sprinter won the Doomben 10,000 and the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes over 1200m at Randwick in the race prior to Brisbane.

Redzel and English share $11.00 in the market and Fell Swoop is at $26.00.

On Saturday Chautauqua, with Brenton Avdulla, has barrier eight, Redzel barrier five, Fell Swoop, with Tye Angland, barrier six and Englishm with Bake Shinn, barrier nine.

Others in the field who will be trying out for a slot are Takedown, Ball Of Muscle and Nieta.

The Shorts is Race 7 on the nine race programme at 3.55pm.

The track is currently rated a Good 4 after 5mm of irrigation in the last 24hrs and 25mm over the last 7 days. The rail will be out 9m from the 1600m to the winning post and 7m for the remainder of the circuit.

Sydney’s weather continues to have little rain forecast except for Thursday when there is a medium (50%) chance of showers in the early morning and 0mm-1mm. The temperature will be 18c. Friday’s forecast is for a sunny day and 22c with Saturday partly cloudy and 12c – 22c.
