Should The Shorts be renamed The Foothills

The feature sprint at Randwick on Saturday is officially named the $200,000, Group 2 Bowermans Office Furniture Shorts (1100m), however, the intriguing nominations on Monday might well have the race better named The Foothills with serious The Everest contenders listed in the 12 nominations.

The make-up of the $10m, WFA The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 14th will continue to be decided over the coming weeks between the various slot holders for race entry, along with form and barring injury. However, Chautauqua, English, Fell Swoop and Redzel from The Shorts nominations, which are extended until Tuesday, are potential runners.

The Hawkes’ trained Chautauqua is the current $4.60 market favourite for The Everest. The seven-year-old Encosta de Lago gelding was last seen when storming down the outside of the Randwick track on April 1st to win the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes over 1200m. He has been prepared to resume with two trials, the last for a fifth over 1020m at Rosehill on September 4th. Chautauqua is dual nominated for the $200,000, Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington.

English, a five-year-old mare also by Encosta de Lago, was second in the TJ Smith Stakes. The Waterhouse and Bott stable then sent her to the Group 1 All Aged Stakes over 1400m for a sixth and a further sixth in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes over 1200m at Morphettville on May 6th. She too has trialled twice, the last for a second over 1000m at Randwick on August 31st.

Canberra trained Fell Swoop completed the trifecta in the TJ Smith Stakes. Trainer Matthew Dale sent him to Brisbane for the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 over 1200m afterwards, but the six-year-old Not A Single Doubt gelding was ninth. He has trialled twice as well, the last for a third over 900m at Rosehill on September 4th.

Redzel does not have a slot yet for The Everest, but the five-year-old Snitzel gelding certainly put his hand up for one when demolishing the field in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes over 1000m at Randwick on September 2nd in race record time and home in 32.91 for the final 600m. The Australian Turf Club have shortlisted Redzel for their slot. The Snowden trained sprinter won the Doomben 10,000 and the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes over 1200m at Randwick in the race prior to Brisbane.

Redzel and English share $11.00 in the market and Fell Swoop is at $26.00.

The rail will be out 9m from the 1600m to the winning post and 7m for the remainder of the circuit.

Sydney’s weather continues to be fine with warm days during the week. Tuesday’s forecast is for a partly cloudy day and 27c, Wednesday sunny and 31c and Thursday a partly cloudy day with a medium (40%) chance of showers with 0mm-1mm and 18c. Friday’s forecast is for a sunny day and 22c with Saturday partly cloudy and 11c – 23c.
