Trained by Aidan O’Brien, who can equal record-setting Hall of Famers Ron McAnally and Charlie Whittingham with a third Million victory, the Galileo four-year-old entire will have Coolmore's number one rider Ryan Moore up.
Deauville captured the Grade 1 Belmont Derby when making his U.S. debut last summer and followed with a close third in the Million, striking the lead in the stretch only to be overhauled by a half-length in the latter stages.
He then captured a Group 3 Irish event earlier this year and finished a good third in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot two months ago. He arrives after a head second in a Group 3 at Leopardstown in Ireland.
The Ballydoyle team arrived Tuesday night and were seen in public for the first time on Thursday morning. After a look at the parade paddock, they walked the track, before cantering home 1200m. Deauville sweated freely on a warm morning, but looked well within himself.
French Group 1 winner Mekhtaal (GB) is certainly eligible to factor with his best. Beaten 3 ½ lengths into sixth by Highland Reel in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s at Royal Ascot last time, the top-class colt is based in France with Jean-Claude Rouget and Frankie Dettori will ride the four-year-old son of Sea the Stars. However, Mekhtaal must overcome the outside post, if he is to be successful.
The Prix d'Ispahan winner galloped well on Thursday morning on the synthetic track under his work rider. He looks the most settled of the visitors at this stage and a good performance on Saturday would not surprise.
The Arlington Million is Race 11 on the 12 race card with a start time of 6.19pm local time.
