The Waterhouse and Bott trained Runaway did just that for the colt’s maiden win in the $40,000 Ascot Restaurant Handicap (1550m) for three-year-old’s at Canterbury on Wednesday. The win set up a long range plan towards the $500,000, Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 7th.
Runaway, a colt by Manhattan Rain bred by Rosemont Stud, was sent to the lead by Josh Parr and they comfortably controlled the five horse field from there. Entering the main straight Parr sent Runaway (59kg) further in front and with one reminder to keep up to the job they went past the post with 2 1/4L to spare.
Gresham (Sebring) (57kg) and Tommy Berry were second with Augustus (Snitzel) (55.5kg) and Tim Clark third, the margin a long head.
The time was 1.35.04 on the Good 4 track with the final 600m in 34.25. Runaway delivered $1.50 on fixed odds and $1.40 on the tote.
“There is plenty more to come from this horse and he is growing in confidence all the time,” said co-trainer Adrian Bott.
“It was great to see him put it all together today, he jumped away quickly and controlled the tempo throughout. He got into a beautiful rhythm and quickened nicely when asked.
“He is fourth up and he has had the trip away to Grafton which really helped him. He had a solid 1500m last start so he was fit and well today. He did not have to do too much and he certainly has the foundation there,” he said.
Bott said that the Champion Stakes would be a target and with the win the stable can space his training towards the long term goal.
“It was a stroll for us out there and when he showed so much speed to clear his rivals and travel so nicely like a really nice horse he was always going to be hard to run down. He is a push button horse to ride and you can do what you like with him. The world is his oyster,” said Parr.
Runaway, out of the Catrail mare Catshaan, was racing for the fourth time and he was coming off two seconds, the last behind the smart D’argento over 1500m at Rosehill on July 29th.
The win added a stake of $22,200, plus a BOBS bonus of $11,250, to his previous stakes of $29,975 for connections including Rosemont, M J Kent, T R Folsom, S Ducat, C Tognolini, D A Wright & Ms K Waterhouse, G1G Racing & Breeding (Mgr: Mrs T L Vogel) and Newbies Syndicate (Mgr: J Davies).
