Friday meeting preview, selections, comments and odds.
In what is arguably the best weekend’s racing in Singapore, the Aushorse Golden Horseshoe highlights what is a cracking Friday night card.
Now worth an incredible $325,000, the Juvenile Group 2 boasts a full field with five runners with winning form to their name.
Heading that list is the former Kiwi MR HANKS who arrived with a good reputation after placing in listed Company back home and duly romped home at his Singapore debut.
That win was ultra-impressive and a subsequent eye-catching trial has the Oscar-owned and James Peters-trained 2YO, the horse to beat.
But the connections of FEROCIOUS will be quietly confident of a playing a major role in this finish.
The Australian-bred gelding by Sebring took on a solid field of 2YO’s on debut where he made light of some traffic issues in running to win with the proverbial leg in the air.
BEE BEE for Shane Baertschiger also won on debut but that was with a light weight in Restricted Maiden Company and he may be tested against MR HANKS and FEROCIOUS.
There are debutantes in the field so the tote will be a handy guide and plenty of other promising juveniles to keep pundits and punters on their toes including IFFRAGAL from the Ricky Le Grange stable and the newcomer, RAHEEB, from the newly minted J Saimee stable.
Best Bets: (MR HANKS race 6, win), (GOLDEN SPARK race 1, value) and (MAIDANZ BEAUTY race 7, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 5 (1, 2, 7, 8 and 10), race 6 (1 and 3), race 7 (3, 4, 5, and 10), race 8 (1, 2, 3, 5, 9 and 10).

Selections; 1 GOLDEN SPARK - 3 BARNBURGH LAD - 2 TRIGGER MAN - 9 D'DON
An inauspicious start to a big weekend of racing but one where a Class dropper in GOLDEN SPARK might get punters off to a flyer. The 3YO took a few runs to show glimpses of form at his first campaign before finding Class 5 and Poly sprints to his liking. His recent poor form in Class 4 was also sans blinkers and the headgear back on suggests he is ready to fire. He has drawn wide in gate 10 but his biggest danger, BARNBURGH LAD, has speed and has dawn just outside him in 11. That suggests the pair may go forward early and hopefully GOLDEN SPARK has the petrol left to run down BARNBURGH LAD who will look the winner late. Last start winner D'DON and TRIGGER MAN resuming from gate 1 the two others that win without surprising with the tote a good guide on the latter.
1 GOLDEN SPARK *** Ignore recent poor form as finds himself in right Class, track and trip with blinkers back on a factor. 8.00
2 TRIGGER MAN *** Resuming after a very good run of Poly form and gives this a shake with market best guide. 5.00
3 BARNBURGH LAD *** Awkwardly drawn again but has pace and in this a very long way. 2.50
4 ARION * Prefer on the turf over longer. 20
5 COOL CAT ** Veteran who is in solid form but over a year since last win. 12
6 DOUBLE CASH ** Long time since last win but always a show over 1000m. 12
7 DRAGON GOLD * No. 100
8 JOHN DUKE * Struggling. 100
9 D'DON *** Showed his best when winning last start and pay to follow. 5.00
10 ONE O NINE * Form reads badly but trip suits and could sneak a place at long odds. 33
11 ALWAYS A WINNER ** Nothing last start but previous form solid so can include in exotics. 12
12 SGFIFTY * Struggles. 100
13 SO PERFECT * Veteran who goes OK on his day but wide gate would make this tough. 33
14 PROBO CHANDROSO * Another veteran who will find the wide gate tough. 33
Selections; 2 MIKCAIPHO - 3 NORTH SKY - 1 STAR KING - 4 RIVER GOLD
Buyer beware in this Class 4 Poly sprint with plenty of non-winners which makes in extremely tough to be confident. Case in point is likely short-priced favourite MIKCAIPHO who has yet to win but has shown plenty at three starts in Singapore. Two starts back he stormed home this trip to just miss and backed that up with a solid effort over 1200m. From a better gate today he should get the favours in running and be hard to hold out. In his favour is the fact that three of the other winning hopes in STAR KING, NORTH SKY and RIVER GOLD all come off disappointing efforts. But STAR KING gets blinkers added with a nice recent trial under his belt and conversely, NORTH SKY loses blinkers and gets a tongue-tie which should see improvement on his debut effort. RIVER GOLD is in the most solid form of that trio and should figure.
1 STAR KING *** Disappointing at two starts in Singapore but recent trial with blinkers suggests he improves with headgear. 8.00
2 MIKCAIPHO *** Backed up eye-catching run with solid effort and in this a long way. 2.00
3 NORTH SKY *** Very disappointing with support at Singapore debut but blinkers off and tongue-tie on so keep safe. 6.00
4 RIVER GOLD *** Ran on well when it was all over last start and gives this a shake if handier in running. 5.00
5 THUNDER CAT ** Backed up surprise win in this Company with solid effort and a must for exotics. 20
6 MASTERMIND ** Took a drop to Class 5 to win but that effort good enough to follow on the Poly. 12
7 PLATOON * Needs Class 5. 50
8 HIKO YUNIKON ** Love to see in Class 5 but showing enough of late to keep safe in exotics. 20
9 HOT GOLD * Just missed in Class 5 last start with excuses in running but does struggle in this Company. 12
10 MONGOLIAN CHIEF * Needs easier and longer. 100
Selections; 5 ASIA - 6 SILVER WIN FORTUNE - 9 ENHANCEMENT - 1 WINNING TANGO
While a couple of the raced brigade in WINNING TANGO and RAPTOR look handy enough types and can improve enough to win this, it is the debutantes who appeal. In fact more than a handful are coming off nice enough trials to win which suggests the tote will be a good guide but as it stands ASIA for Stephen Gray could be hard to beat. The 4YO has had numerous good trials and G Boss from gate 2 looks a good combination. SILVER WIN FORTUNE has also trialled well and a 4kg claim for CS Chin could be a winning move by trainer Dan Meagher after drawing gate 2. The 3YO ENHANCEMENT has also looked handy at the trials and plays a part while the two 2YO's in the race - POWER WARRIOR and SATELLITE ROCKET - both could show up but both need luck after drawing badly.
1 WINNING TANGO *** Has pace to burn and will be hard to run down. 5.00
2 TYPHON ** Improved effort last start with same claimer and pay to keep safe. 12
3 DAYUAN ** Will be handy throughout and in the mix. 9.00
4 NATURAL WATER * Blinkers back on but struggles as a rule. 100
5 ASIA *** Plenty of nice trials under his belt and can win on debut with G Boss from gate 2 a factor. 5.00
6 SILVER WIN FORTUNE *** Another debutante with enough good trials to win on debut with a 4kg claim a smart move. 12
7 DISCRETELY RED ** Wide draw a concern on debut but Official Trial was solid and pay to keep safe. 12
8 MIRACLE WEI WEI * Will appreciate OK debut effort but may want longer than this. 50
9 ENHANCEMENT *** Trialling well enough to win on debut with support likely. 4.00
10 RAPTOR *** Nothing when asked last start but gets blinkers and can figure. 12
11 POWER WARRIOR ** Recent nice trial was with headgear so take on trust on debut from wide gate. 12
12 SATELLITE ROCKET ** Another debutante who has trialled well enough to follow although will need luck from wide alley. 12
13 ARIEL * Will find this Company to his liking but still need stop improve. 50
14 SPECIAL KING * Nothing on debut. 200
Selections; 3 DISTINCTIVE DARCI - 1 POLE PARADISE - 8 SHADOW OF WAR - 4 GOLDEN TOMAHAWK
Things start to get serious on a Friday night when some promising Poly sprinters head to the start in this Class 3 sprint. Starting from the top, POLE PARADISE resumed with a super effort to just miss in BM97 Company and he will have plenty of admirers back in Class 3. But he will need to be at his best up against two very progressive types resuming in DISTINCTIVE DARCI and SHADOW OF WAR. In particular DISTINCTIVE DARCI was putting together a very impressive body of work - which included a crack at the 3YO Sprint back in March. His recent strong trial and a liking for this surface suggests he is the one to beat. SHADOW OF WAR has three Poly wins from five career starts and he also trials like he plays a big part first up with D David to ride. The field has depth and MR LUCK, GOLDEN TOMAHAWK, ELITE STAR and HELLO MICHELLE all likely to figure in the mix.
1 POLE PARADISE *** Just missed in good Company when resuming and hard to beat on a repeat of that effort. 5.00
2 MR LUCK *** Yet to win beyond a 1000m but very much appreciates being back on the Poly and should figure late. 12
3 DISTINCTIVE DARCI *** Resuming. Very progressive 3YO who loves the Poly and recent trials suggests he can win this. 3.00
4 GOLDEN TOMAHAWK *** Swooper who is always a show with best work expected late. 6.00
5 KNIGHT WAGER ** Always runs on and will pinch one of these sooner than later. 12
6 ELITE STAR *** Resumed with good effort to place and has a good poly record so can win. 11
7 HELLO MICHELLE *** Turned some good Class form into an easy win and pay to follow on that effort. 12
8 SHADOW OF WAR *** Resuming after showing plenty at his first campaign and can win on the back of a nice trial. 6.00
9 KATAGAS ** Resuming and trialling well. Could show up from gate 1 at value. 33
10 WINNING MAN ** Hard to follow and coming off a shocker but recent trial OK so keep safe. 33
11 HOST THE NATION * Like to see in easier Company. 50
Selections; 7 PERCIUS - 8 SPUR ME ON - 10 EDEN GARDEN - 1 POWERFUL AS WIND
A typical Class 5 raffle and with many of the field wearing the "gay deceivers" tag with pride, SPUR ME ON might be the obvious pick. The 4YO took some 18 starts to break his maiden status but backed that up with another win. A Class 5 hat trick is rare but no reason to think he can't win again off the back of a good trial with B Vorster staying on. But PERCIUS could be hard to hold out. The 5YO is overdue to win and was never likely with heavy support last start but that effort was against the bias and his work late suggests he can make amends with blinkers off. At the top of the weights, POWERFUL AS WIND improves lengths back in Class 5 with Munro a factor and POP GEMS showed enough in Class 5 last start to follow. EDEN GARDEN’s long-term maiden status is a concern but he is in form and will figure heavily in the finish.
1 POWERFUL AS WIND *** Drops back to Class 5 and can seriously consider with Munro to ride. 8.00
2 POP GEMS *** Ran on OK late last start over 1200m and could surprise with blinkers on over the mile. 33
3 ALFONSO ** Just fair last start but mile suits and should figure in exotics. 12
4 CONFOUND ** Showed some improvement in this Company last start and mile may suit. 33
5 DANGER ZONE ** Never involved last start but can include in skinny end of exotics. 33
6 FRENCH VINTAGE ** Nothing last start but gets blinkers and can show up on best form. 33
7 PERCIUS *** Ran on well against the bias with support last start this trip and can make quick amends with blinkers off. 3.50
8 SPUR ME ON *** Hard to fault winning form and can knock in a rare Class 5 hat trick. 3.30
9 BIG REGARDS ** Never threatened last start and will figure in the exotic mix. 20
10 EDEN GARDEN *** Eighteen start maiden who ran on well last start and should win one sooner than later. 5.00
11 PERFECT CHALLENGER ** Drawn wide and nothing at his last few starts but switch back to the turf could see improvement at odds. 20
12 BOHEMIAN * Placed two back before reverting to type last start. No. 50
13 HOLY THOMAS * No. 200
14 SUN DANCE ** Never involved last start and worth a look in exotics on previous form. 20
15 LUCKY COME ** Placed at odds at his last couple in the Poly and can consider. 20
16 KENNEDY * Gets tongue-tie but easier to ignore. 100
Selections; 1 MR HANKS - 3 FEROCIOUS - 12 RAHEEB - 14 BRINGER OF WAR
It's safe to say in the six instalments of the Aushorse Golden Horseshoe, the 2017 field easily has the most depth. And while the winner here will have a lot to live up to with an honour roll that includes WAR AFFAIR, SUPER EASY and MR BIG to name but three, the form from this 2YO series will hold up for many years to come. MR HANKS should start favourite on his commanding win at his Singapore debut where he showed his listed placing in NZ was no fluke. FEROCIOUS looks the likely danger after his strong win on debut. Trained by Mark Walker, FEROCIOUS had traffic issues on that occasion and looked to beat a very solid 2YO field that included CHARGER, MOKASTAR and CAPTAIN JAMIE who all play a part in this race. Too many other with winning hopes to mention but former champion jockey, J Saimee, makes his training debut with RAHEEB who is not without a chance at his first start on the back of some nice trials.
1 MR HANKS *** Former Kiwi who won handsomely at Singapore debut and hardest to beat with luck from wide gate. 3.50
2 BE BEE ** Just hung on with a lightweight to win on debut but will strip fitter and in this a long way from the ace. 12
3 FEROCIOUS *** Impressed when winning vowed well after having traffic issues on debut. Big show. 6.00
4 WHISTLING WIN * Found it all two tough late at second career start and wide gate doesn't help his cause. 20
5 YAYA PAPAYA ** Improved with racing to win at start four and can include in exotics. 20
6 CHARGER ** Did it tough on pace last start and effort to place good enough to follow from gate 4. 12
7 MOKASTAR ** Super honest and did it tough enough last start to give this a shake. 10
8 AUSPICIOUS DAY ** Finding form and will run into the place mix late. 12
9 AUGUSTANO ** Impressed when flying home late at odds behind Bee Bee on debut and not without a show here. 12
10 CAPTAIN JAMIE ** Blew the start and his chances on debut with support but happy to keep safe on trial form. 20
11 D'GREAT STAR ** Has speed and improves with racing and blinkers added. 20
12 RAHEEB ** Trials good enough to think he could surprise a few on debut with market a good guide. 20
13 SAFEER ** Trials have been good but facing a tough ask from widest alley on debut. 33
14 BRINGER OF WAR ** More than handy and has tested himself against older horses so can follow. 12
15 IFFRAGAL ** Ran on well to place at Singapore debut and will work into calculations late. 20
16 MAKE U FAMOUS * Just OK at the trials and wide gate makes him easier to ignore. 200
17 FIRST CHOICE * Showed pace on debut but gate suggests he is no hope here. 200
18 CONFIDE * Hard to have on last start effort. 200
Selections; 5 MAIDANZ BEAUTY - 4 MACARTHUR - 3 GARIZA - 10 PREFERRED
An odd Class 4 Poly sprint given there are no last start winners and not many horses with "get on me next time" form. So MAIDANZ BEAUTY gets her chance. The 4YO mare was never involved last start over 1000m in this Company but is better than that and can win with gate 1 a factor. MACARTHUR probably has the most upside after showing plenty of ability in a campaign that included solid efforts at 2YO Group level and placing at 3YO Group level. True, he hasn't gone on with the job but this race suits and he will be prominent throughout. Two others that appeal are PREFERRED who can be his own worst enemy but looks due while GARIZA has shown more than enough at three Singapore starts and goes close with luck from a wide gate.
1 JUSTICE FIRST ** Yet to threaten at six starts in Singapore but could improve dropping to Class 4 Company. 12
2 ROYAL FORTUNE ** Not a mile away last start and will appreciate Class 4. Keep safe. 12
3 GARIZA *** Thereabouts at three starts in Singapore and gets very chance on the Poly. 5.00
4 MACARTHUR *** Finding it hard to win but gets blinkers and race should suit. 5.00
5 MAIDANZ BEAUTY *** Form better than it reads and did enough late last start to seriously consider from gate 1. 7.00
6 BOARD WALK ** Just battled last start after winning similar affair two back so take on trust. 12
7 ELITE WARRIOR ** Has been very disappointing since strong maiden win and another to take on trust. 12
8 FALKIRK LEAD ** In solid form in similar affairs to this and gets his chance to break 12 month winning drought. 8.00
9 LIM'S BULLET * Disappointing with support in similar affair last start and needs to lift. 12
10 PREFERRED *** Drawn badly but looks ready to turn some solid form into a win and a good value option. 12
11 STAR INVINCIBLE ** Excuses at his last couple and could run a race at odds so keep safe. 20
12 AMAZING MAN ** Might need it a tad easier to win but in good form so have to respect. 12
13 WHITE COFFEE ** Form better than it reads and not without a place hope at odds. 33
14 AUSPICIOUS ACE *** Three-year-old filly who is more than up to winning a race like this. 10
Selections; 2 LIM'S SHOT - 3 NORTHERN KNIGHT - 5 SECRET WIN - 1 MUSCLE BEACH
As usual a tough race to finish what should have been a very competitive Friday nights racing. Plenty look to have genuine winning hopes and LIM'S SHOT should figure very prominently in this finish. Vlad Duric jumps on and given what the gelding showed last start over this trip from a wide gate, he should get every chance from barrier 5. Others that look due include NORTHERN KNIGHT who has been running on well over shorter trips and SECRET WIN who gets blinkers dropping back from 2000m. MUSCLE BEACH showed last start that this Company suits while HUMDINGER and last start maiden winner, MILITARY MIGHT, are not in form and can figure in the winning mix.
1 MUSCLE BEACH *** Not seen often on the turf but showed last start Class 4 is his caper and goes close with handy 4kg claim. 12
2 LIM'S SHOT *** Just missed last start in similar affair and should figure again. 4.00
3 NORTHERN KNIGHT *** Has been running on well so mile suits and can win. 5.00
4 OPTIMUS ** Near on a year since last win but going along OK and can consider with blinkers off. 20
5 SECRET WIN *** Racing well without winning but blinkers added over the mile might do the trick. 10
6 GOLD HILL ** Has found some form of late and worth an each-way look. 6.00
7 EASTER MATE ** Did it tough on the pace last start and did look like finding form so pay to keep safe at value. 20
8 GROUND CONTROL ** Backed up maiden win this trip with a good effort in KSD Company and worth thought with blinkers added. 12
9 HUMDINGER *** Showed last start why is always a show over this type of trip with best work expected late. 10
10 MILITARY MIGHT *** Broke overdue maiden status this trip last start and happy to think he can go on with the job. 9.00
11 BRILLIANT ONE ** Last start better than the result and might be a good value option in this field. 20
12 SIR REGINALD * Reassess in easier Company. 200
13 DREAMER LEGEND ** Broke maiden status when given the favours last start in Class 5 and this is much tougher. 20
