Sunday meeting preview
Sunday meeting preview, selections, comments and odds.
It’s a Group 1 Sunday in Singapore and the 2017 Patron’s Bowl looks a beauty on paper with the best middle distance 4YO’s to do battle over the metric mile.
And the best of them is DEBT COLLECTOR who from just 14 career starts has five Group wins to his name - three of them at the Group 1 level.
The reigning Singapore Horse-of-the-Year loomed large in the Stewards’ Cup before being a tad naughty late - he tried to bite LIM’S CRUISER at the 100m mark - but he would have very much appreciated that first-up run after a Dubai sojourn and will be very hard to hold out late.
In saying that, LIM’S CRUISER has won at Group 1 level in 2017 - the Lion City Cup - and his run in the Stewards’ Cup was every bit as good as DEBT COLLECTORS and will also appreciate both the 1600m and the Long Course on Sunday.
ALIBI won the Stewards’ Cup and obviously has to be respected on that gusty effort to hold off the challengers late and INFANTRY was right in the mix and will keep them all very honest again.
There are some progressive types in the race including ELITE EXCALIBUR and LIM’S SAMURAI but class should prevail and the four top-rated rated horses that dominated the Stewards’ Cup should again clean-sweep the placings.
Best Bets: (DEBT COLLECTOR race 8, win), (MURRAYFIELD race 9, value) and (MORITZ ECLIPSE race 10, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 7 (1, 2, 5 and 7), race 8 (1 and 4), race 9 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 13) and race 10 (2, 4, 6, 7 and 10).

Selections; 2 SHOOT UP HIGH - 6 PHIDIAS - 5 EL CAMINO - 9 SILK ROUTE
A very moderate KSD open proceedings. SHOOT UP HIGH battled on the poly last start but blinkers come off and he is better suited here; his trial was strong and he can show up from the good gate. PHIDIAS gets blinkers and is suited by this class, surface and distance; he can improve on his recent moderate for on the back of a good trial. The weak field may give EL CAMINO a chance to break through. The 4YO was solid when resuming and Vlad Duric stays on; his only win was at this trip and can be in the finish. SILK ROUTE has been getting beaten on the poly and is yet to win on turf but placed in Class 5 at his past two runs over this trip and could show up for the West Australian master William Pike. Of the others, LINCOLN'S EXCUSE's form has been poor since resuming but he may find this easier and could show up from the good gate with John Powell to ride while GANNET drops back in distance after placing last start.

Selections; 4 MADE IN CHINA - 1 BRING ME JOY - 12 RAPTOR - 3 FAREES
With no standouts it will pay to watch market on the first starters. FAREES gets blinkers after being runner-up at his past two outings, he gets a chance to break through with John Powell taking the mount. BRING ME JOY had support and was run down at his Singapore debut but he should be improved and can be prominent throughout. RAPTOR had support and debuted well; he is awkwardly drawn but should be prominent. Of the debutants MADE IN CHINA placed once in four outings in Australia when trained by Michael Freedman; he has trialled strongly but was an on-pacer in Australia and is poorly drawn. BATTLE PLAN's first trial was sound and he could show up. PLUCKY LAD improved last start and could be running on.

Selections; 3 HELLO MICHELLE - 1 MY HORSE - 9 DRAGON KINGDOM - 4 ROYAL
Another moderate Class 4 on the poly and not much between a number of contenders. HELLO MICHELLE hung out but just missed last start in similar affair; she is poorly drawn again but gets a claim and could be running on late. MY HORSE led and his rider lost the whip late last start; he gets Michael Rodd and should be prominent again. SOUTHERN CHIEF was hampered last start but is much better suited at this trip and could get a good run throughout. ROYAL GUARD just missed when supported last start and can be in the finish again. ELITE DIAMOND has not been far away at recent outings but is yet to win in Singapore; this distance suits and he should get a good run throughout. Of the others, the Maidens SUPER BALL and DRAGON KINGDOM (with support) have been racing well in this grade and could show up again.
1 MY HORSE *** Led and rider lost whip late last start. Gets Michael Rodd and should be prominent. 5.00

11 MONGOLIAN CHIEF * Battling and is looking for easier and longer. 50
Selections; 1 MONTAIGNE - 6 ECLIPSE SPLASH - 2 SOUTHERN MAN - 3 STAR GENIUS
An interesting Class 4 with a couple of up-and-comers involved. ECLIPSE SPLASH showed his Malaysian form was well up to Singapore standard last start; he is awkwardly drawn but shows promise and should be hard to hold out. The competition will come from SOUTHERN MAN who is also unbeaten in two outings; he is having his first turf outing but should be prominent. The benchmark may be MONTAIGNE who is racing consistently in similar company and from the good gate should be hard to run down again. Of the others STAR GENIUS doesn't win often but runs on and the claim may help while ZIPPY GENERAL is consistent and should be running on but also finds it hard to win. POWER LIN won one if these four starts back; he has battled in higher class and on the poly since but could show up.
1 MONTAIGNE *** Racing consistently in similar company and from the good gate should be hard to run down again. 4.00
2 SOUTHERN MAN *** Unbeaten in two poly outings. Having first turf outing but should be prominent. 4.00

5 ZIPPY GENERAL ** Consistent but finding it hard to win. Should be running on. 10
6 ECLIPSE SPLASH *** Showed his Malaysian form was well up to Singapore standard last start. Awkwardly drawn but shows promise and should be hard to hold out. 3.50

11 MUSCULAR DRAGON * Runs on late but is looking for easier. 33
Selections; 3 HIGH COUNCIL - 2 IKING - 12 LIM'S SPARKLE - 2 IKING
A KSD with very little depth. HIGH COUNCIL was run down over 1600m last start and is better suited by this distance; he is awkwardly drawn but can be prominent throughout. IKING fought on well over a mile last start. He is a tough veteran suited by this class and distance, the claim helps and he can be in the finish. BE BOLD battled on the poly last start when resuming; he is better suited this class, surface and trip, he can show up for Michael Rodd. LIM'S SPARKLE lost on protest over this trip last start; he is still a Maiden but his only placings have been at this trip and he should be running on. FUNKADELIC won in Class 5 over this trip last start and he looks the best of the rest.
1 BE BOLD *** Battled on poly last start when resuming. Better suited this class and trip. Can show up for Michael Rodd. 5.00
2 IKING *** Fought on well over a mile last start. Tough veteran suited this class and distance. Claim helps and can be in the finish. 4.00

6 LITTLE BIG MAN ** Battling at recent outings and poorly drawn again but could improve for William Pike. 20
7 SUN SEEKER ** Form better than it reads and will be running on at odds. 33
8 ARR FLAIR ** Blinker off and 1400m on turf may help but not the gate. 20
9 FUNKADELIC ** Broke through in Class 5 over this trip last start. This is harder but could show up again. 10
10 THE MIGHTY THOR * Blinkers back on and ran on late when resuming after bleeding attack but best form is on poly over shorter. 20
11 GOLDEN SPARK * Needs poly and Class 5. 33
12 LIM'S SPARKLE *** Maiden who lost on protest over this trip last start. Big show. 6.00
13 ISTANA * Needs easier and longer. 33
Selections; 1 OLYMPIC ANTHEM - 2 RAISE NO DOUBT - 4 THE GENERAL - 3 GOOD NEWS
Some good sprinters in this BM97. OLYMPIC ANTHEM is consistent, is suited by this class, surface and distance and should be hard to hold off. THE GENERAL had support and wasn't far away last start when resuming after being freshened; he should be handy throughout. RAISE NO DOUBT is resuming and has a good record on the poly; he has had plenty of trials and could show up fresh - watch the market. GOOD NEWS has disappointed at his past two outings but has a good record at this trip and could be closing late if the race is run to suit swoopers. Of the others, PIONEER SEVEN is not the most reliable but won one of these last start over 1000m and MYCAPTAINOBLIVIOUS could improve at his second start for a new stable.
1 OLYMPIC ANTHEM *** Consistent. Suited this class, surface and distance. Should be hard to hold off. 3.00
2 RAISE NO DOUBT *** Resuming and has a good record on the poly and first up. Has had plenty of trials and could show up fresh. Watch market. 4.00
3 GOOD NEWS ** Has disappointed at past two outings but has a good record at this trip and could be closing late. 6.00
4 THE GENERAL *** Had support and wasn't far away last start when resuming after being freshened. Should be handy throughout. 4.00
5 MYCAPTAINOBLIVIOUS * Did not show up when resuming at first start for new stable. Has a good record at this trip and could improve. Watch market. 14
6 PIONEER SEVEN ** Not the most reliable but won one of these last start over 1000m. He has speed and can give a sight. 12
7 ROYAL RULER ** Has struggled at recent outings but suited this class and distance so can improve. 20
8 LIGHTNING FAST * Suited this distance and has no weight but class may test. 16
9 SQUIRE OSBALDESTON * Wants longer. 33
Selections; 1 CAORUNN - 5 CLARTON SUPER - 2 DARCI CHARMER - 7 LIM'S SHOWCASE
Another good race with some smart Class 3 sprinters involved. CAORUNN returns to turf after two poly runs. He is awkwardly drawn but can be in the finish and worth noting his win two starts back was by six lengths. DARCI CHARMER will find this easier than recent outings and should be hard to hold out with best work expected late. CLARTON SUPER is showing promise and steps up in class; he should be handy throughout and winning form is always good form. Of the rest. RED DAWN disappointed last start but could show up on best form while LIM'S SHOWCASE, just missed when resuming in a BM67, should be improved. WINNING MAN has placed in this class at his past two outings and should be handy throughout.
1 CAORUNN *** Returns to turf after two poly runs including a strong win. Awkwardly drawn but can be in the finish. 4.00
2 DARCI CHARMER *** Will find this easier than recent outings. Should be hard to hold out with best work expected late. 3.50
3 MR LUCK * Did not show up on turf last start and better suited on poly. 33
4 RED DAWN ** Never involved last start from side gate but always a show if handier in running. 10
5 CLARTON SUPER *** Showing promise and steps up in class. Should be handy throughout. 4.00
6 VON KRUMM * Recent form ordinary but has won in this class and five times over 1200m. Needs to improve. 33
7 LIM'S SHOWCASE *** Just missed when resuming in BM67 and should be improved. Can show up with gate 1 a factor. 8.00
8 MY BROTHERS KEEPER * Resuming after long break. Has had several trials but might like longer. Watch market. 33
9 ZEDKAAR * Did not show up when resuming. Recent trial was only fair. Gets William Pike and may improve. 20
10 LIM'S KNIGHT * Has battled since Class 4 win and might need easier but will appreciate being back on the Poly. 20
11 WINNING MAN ** Has placed in this class at past two outings. Should be handy throughout. 10
Selections; 1 DEBT COLLECTOR - 4 LIM'S CRUISER - 3 INFANTRY - 2 ALIBI
While it would be nice to think a couple of the progressive types down in the ratings can step up and be competitive, at set-weights the Patron's Bowl looks a race in four between DEBT COLLECTOR, ALIBI, INFANTRY and LIM'S CRUISER. The quartet are head-and-shoulders above the rest of the field and class will prevail in this Group 1 mile. Who wins? DEBT COLLECTOR loomed large in the Stewards' Cup before trying to bite (yes, bite) LIM'S CRUISER and he will be hard to hold out with the step up to the mile on the Long Course in his favour. In saying that, LIM'S CRUISER certainly was holding his own in that race and the pair will be neck-and-neck again. INFANTRY gets his chance over the mile and it's hard to fault ALIBI who held the trio at bay over 1400m and will look the winner at some stage. ELITE EXCALIBUR, LIM'S SAMURAI and PREDITOR can be included in exotics.
1 DEBT COLLECTOR *** Looked to have every chance in the Stewards' Cup but right in this finish. 5.00
2 ALIBI *** Yet to race over the mile but held them all off in the Stewards' Cup to knock in well-deserved Group win and in this a long way. 6.00
3 INFANTRY *** In super form and can go one better here with the mile ideal. 4.00
4 LIM'S CRUISER *** Looked to have every chance in the Stewards Cup as even-money fave but can make amends. 3.00
5 ELITE EXCALIBUR ** Returned from Dubai with good Class 3 win and pay to keep safe. 12
6 ABSOLUTE MIRACLE * Tested in this Company at set weights but should be running on at odds. 20
7 LIM'S SAMURAI ** Progressive type who will be prominent throughout but facing biggest test to date. 12
8 DINGHU MOUNTAIN * Blinkers off and goes OK but this is much harder than Class 3. 33
9 PREDITOR ** Competitive in the Stewards' Cup and step up to the mile with blinkers off could see him play a part. 20
10 MR SCORSESE * Going along OK in easier Company but tested here. 33
11 KEEPITUP * Recent trial was good but not up to this level and may be a better proposition on the Poly with blinkers added. 50
Selections; 2 MURRAYFIELD - 1 RED CLAW - 3 LIM'S SHOT - 4 LIM'S CASINO
A terrific race considering there are four last start winners - LIM'S SHOT, OTTAWA, KOKONI and ROAN RANGER - who all look like they can all go on with the job and a plethora of other winning chances. And while ROAN RANGER steps up from Class 5 and OTTAWA and KOKONI are coming off their maiden wins, all have shown enough to think they are up to Class 4 Company and must be respected. LIM'S SHOT won over 1200m in this Company and while tested at the mile, he must be respected with visiting hoop Willy Pike on board. But plenty of others that win without surprising including RED CLAW, LIM'S CASINO and GOLAZO while MURRAYFIELD very much appreciates the drop to Class 4 and can win if anywhere near his best which included a placing behind the Patron's Bowl fancy, Infantry, in November last year.
1 RED CLAW *** Blinkers off after being disappointing not to win with support of late but gets another chance. 5.00
2 MURRAYFIELD *** Form solid without being spectacular but drops to Class 4 and can win on best form. 8.00
3 LIM'S SHOT *** Just got the chocolates last start over 1200m and can follow although query at the trip. 6.00
4 LIM'S CASINO *** In form, handles the mile and in this a very long way. 6.00
5 OTTAWA *** Broke maiden status in fine style last start and pay to follow with M Rodd retaining the ride. 7.00
6 KOKONI *** Another chance coming off a solid maiden win and worth following. 12
7 LAKE HUKA ** Just fair last start but always a solid each-way show at value. 20
8 SIAM GEMSTONE ** Disappointing since maiden win but mile on the turf may suit. 20
9 GOLAZO *** Hasn't won for over a year but in the mix of late with support and pay to keep very safe. 10
10 SIR REGINALD * Will appreciate being back on the turf but hard to have on recent form. 50
11 MURDOCH * Reassess in easier Company. 50
12 GREAT SEVEN ** Maiden who ran on well over 1400m last start and could surprise at odds. 20
13 ROAN RANGER *** Tested this Company but last start Class 5 win was very good and could pinch this. 12
14 O'REILLY BAY ** Form reads badly but the mile on the turf in this Company suits so keep safe at long odds. 33
15 HERO IN THE WIND * Maiden who needs easier. 100
Selections; 4 MORITZ ECLIPSE - 6 EFFORTLESS - 7 XIONG FONG - 2 THE WIND
There is no better excuse for having a duck egg in the form book than dislodging the jockey so we can ignore MORTIZ ECLIPSE's last run and give him another chance in a race that suits. And while the fall was no fault of apprentice Y Salim, the fact M Rodd goes on can only give punters confidence that he can win. Elsewhere, it's an odd bunch where horses either have winning hopes or none at all. Those that can win include THE WIND dropping to Class 4, EFFORTLESS who is in extremely honest form and MAREA NEGRO who is always an each-way hope. Last start maiden winners XIONG FONG and SPEEDY PHOENIX are also worth following in Class 4.
1 IVANHOE ** Competitive without being a threat in Singapore but will appreciate Class 4 Company and pay to keep safe. 20
2 THE WIND *** Excuses last start not to finish closer and will also appreciate Class 4 and could surprise. 12
3 BEST WISHES * Easier to ignore. 33
4 MORITZ ECLIPSE *** Lost jockey last start and this race looks suitable to show his best with gate 1 and senior hoop a factor. 4.00
5 SENATOR * Has been disappointing. 33
6 EFFORTLESS *** Honest and placed last start on the turf and happy to keep following. 3.60
7 XIONG FONG *** Broke maiden status last start after excuses the start prior and should be more than competitive in this Company. 8.00
8 SPEEDY PHOENIX ** Still has a bit to learn but broke maiden status with heavy support last start and pay to keep safe with switch to senior hoop. 8.00
9 STEEL CUTTER * Former Malaysian resuming and market only guide on exposed local trial form. 20
10 MAREA NEGRO *** In very honest form and pay to follow each-way. 6.00
11 NOVA SPIRIT * Can run on but prefer over longer. 33
12 HIKO YUNIKON * Honest but prefer on the Poly and may be looking for easier. 20
13 MUSCULAR CAPTAIN * Should need longer and easier. 33
