Race: 1 (653) DEAUVILLE AUGUST YEARLING SALES HANDICAP Class 4 1000 m
GRACE HEART jumped out at the start, resulting in THE INVINCIBLE being hampered when tightened onto the hindquarters of FLYING GODSPELL.
JOLLY BOUNTIFUL began only fairly.
Soon after the start, FLYING GODSPELL and HIGH ENERGY raced tight inside STARTLING POWER which shifted in.
Also soon after the start, SAKURA FIGHTER, which began awkwardly, had to be steadied when tightened for room between MORETHANLUCKY which shifted out and JUNZI which was taken in by TRENDIFUL.
For the majority of the race, STARTLING POWER raced wide and without cover.
A veterinary inspection of MORETHANLUCKY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
GRACE HEART and OCEAN ROAR were sent for sampling.
Race: 2 (654) FRANCE GALOP OWNERS DEPARTMENT HANDICAP Class 5 2200 m
MEDIC SWORDSMAN and LOYAL CRAFTSMAN were slow to begin.
STORM KID lifted its front feet off the ground as the start was effected and was slow to begin.
On the first turn near the 2000 Metres, LUCKY SEBRING shifted out and made contact with WEALTHY FORTUNE.
After leaving the 2000 Metres, STORM KID commenced to prove very difficult to settle, shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of SWEET BEAN. STORM KID continued to over-race badly and approaching the 1800 Metres was shifted out from behind SWEET BEAN and in so doing clipped the heels of that horse and blundered. STORM KID was then allowed to stride forward to assume the lead at the winning post on the first occasion.
When the pace slackened near the 1300 Metres, TELEPHATIA commenced to over-race and was checked away from the heels of SWEET BEAN. In this incident, TELEPHATIA shifted out, resulting in ALWAYS WONGCHOY being taken out and becoming awkwardly placed on the heels of PRECISIONCRAFTSMAN. TELEPHATIA, which was proving difficult to manage, then shifted back in, resulting in LOYAL CRAFTSMAN, which had improved to its inside, being checked. As the Stewards were satisfied that the slowing of the pace and the racing manners of TELEPHATIA had been the primary cause of the incident, no further action was taken.
Also near the 1300 Metres, WEALTHY FORTUNE was shifted out from behind AUDACITY and allowed to improve its position around that horse. When WEALTHY FORTUNE shifted out, PRECISIONCRAFTSMAN was taken wider and consequently obliged to race wide and without cover for the remainder of the event.
PRECISIONCRAFTSMAN lost its left front plate after the race.
When questioned, M L Yeung stated that the circumstances of the race did not suit TELEPHATIA. He said due to the slow tempo on the turn out of the Straight on the first occasion TELEPHATIA had to be checked away from the heels of runners in front. He said for some distance approaching and making the Home Turn TELEPHATIA again had to be checked away from the heels of LUCKY SEBRING which was under pressure to maintain its position. He said as a consequence TELEPHATIA failed to close off as expected and was disappointing. A veterinary inspection of TELEPHATIA immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
When questioned, J Moreira stated that although the performance of ALWAYS WONGCHOY was disappointing on face value, the horse was not suited by the tempo of the race. A veterinary inspection of ALWAYS WONGCHOY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
WEALTHY FORTUNE and AUDACITY were sent for sampling.
Race: 3 (655) LONGCHAMP RACECOURSE HANDICAP Class 3 1800 m
HIGH VOLATILITY shifted in at the start, taking MISTER MONTE in onto EASY HEDGE which was hampered and in turn taken in onto RICKFIELD which was steadied away from the heels of ISTANBUL BEY.
Near the 1500 Metres, BEAUTY LOVE was awkwardly placed inside the heels of HIGH VOLATILITY which was then shifted out to afford BEAUTY LOVE more racing room.
K Teetan (EASY HEDGE) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that passing the winning post on the first occasion he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of MISTER MONTE, resulting in that horse striking the heels of EASY HEDGE and faltering. K Teetan was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday, 11 June 2017 and to expire on Thursday, 15 June 2017 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Teetan’s good race riding record. Following this incident, MISTER MONTE commenced to hang out, raced ungenerously for some distance and consequently was left racing wide and without cover.
Approaching the 1000 Metres, BEAUTY LOVE commenced to race keenly and was shifted out off the heels of the leader HIGH VOLATILITY, resulting in EASY HEDGE being hampered and taken wider.
Near the 500 Metres, as EASY HEDGE shifted out into a three wide position, both VICTORY BOYS (S Clipperton) and SHARP SAILOR commenced to improve into tight running to the inside of that horse. Then rounding the Home Turn, SHARP SAILOR was awkwardly placed between EASY HEDGE and VICTORY BOYS and at the 300 Metres had to be steadied when VICTORY BOYS shifted out slightly to improve. S Clipperton was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Passing the 100 Metres, HAPPY CONTENDER was steadied and shifted out across the heels of HIGH VOLATILITY to continue improving.
When questioned regarding his riding of SHARP SAILOR in the middle stages and why he did not avail himself of a position on the rail behind BEAUTY LOVE, N Callan stated that when he had won on SHARP SAILOR over 2200 Metres on 22 December 2016, he had made a mid-race move and the horse had made a long sustained run. He said therefore in this event he elected to remain racing one horse off the rail behind EASY HEDGE in order to give himself the option of making a similar mid-race move if the pace were to slacken. He said however that the pace was relatively genuine and he was content to follow EASY HEDGE until making the turn near the 500 Metres where he endeavoured to improve to the outside of that horse. He said however that SHARP SAILOR was reluctant to shift out from behind EASY HEDGE and when EASY HEDGE shifted out into a three wide position soon afterwards, he then chose to improve inside that horse. He added however that SHARP SAILOR, which is one-paced, was not able to quicken with VICTORY BOYS which improved to its inside which resulted in SHARP SAILOR being left in an awkward position between those runners soon after straightening.
A veterinary inspection of MISTER MONTE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of EASY HEDGE immediately following the race found that horse to have sustained abrasions to the right hock. Before being allowed to race again, EASY HEDGE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
VICTORY BOYS and HIGH VOLATILITY were sent for sampling.
Race: 4 (656) EQUIDIA RACING CHANNEL HANDICAP Class 4 1650 m
After beginning awkwardly, DARING HEART was then steadied and shifted across behind runners from the outside barrier.
From wide barriers, SPINNING DANCER and GOOD CHOICE were also steadied soon after the start and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
A short distance after the start, PO CHING TREASURE had to be checked and lost ground when crowded for room between DYNAMIC LIONS which jumped in and LEOWL which was taken out by AMAZING GOLD which shifted out at the start. As there was no rider error associated with this incident, no further action was taken.
At the 1000 Metres, AMAZING GOLD had to be checked away from the heels of SUPERIOR BOY which was steadied behind CALL ME AWESOME (C Y Ho) which had been steadied after assuming the lead. C Y Ho was cautioned and advised to ensure that he does not steady the pace too abruptly in similar circumstances. DARING HEART, which was following AMAZING GOLD, was checked away from the heels of that horse at the 900 Metres.
When ridden forward to improve its position at the turn near the 1000 Metres, CASA MASTER (Apprentice H T Mo) ran out, resulting in PO CHING TREASURE being hampered when taken wider. Apprentice Mo was severely reprimanded for his riding at this stage and his lack of control over his mount which was subsequently allowed to stride forward to assume the lead in the Back Straight.
DYNAMIC LIONS raced wide and without cover until the 700 Metres at which stage that horse came under severe pressure.
For some distance after the 500 Metres, GLENEALY PRIZE was held up behind DYNAMIC LIONS as that horse continued to give ground.
When questioned, S Clipperton stated that GLENEALY PRIZE was inclined to hang out in the middle stages and then after being held up behind DYNAMIC LIONS for some distance approaching the Home Turn, the horse did not respond to his riding and, in his opinion, raced "flat”. A veterinary inspection of GLENEALY PRIZE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
When questioned, J Moreira stated that in accordance with his instructions he had LEOWL positioned in a prominent position. He said however that LEOWL came under severe pressure approaching and rounding the Home Turn and at the entrance to the Straight commenced to give ground. He said after being further tested, LEOWL continued to give ground and became unbalanced in its action and as he had concerns that there might be something amiss with the horse, he eased it down over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of LEOWL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of LEOWL, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, LEOWL will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of AMAZING GOLD and DARING HEART immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
LEOWL, CALL ME AWESOME and AGIAAL were sent for sampling.
Race: 5 (657) LE FRENCH MAY TROPHY (HANDICAP) (Sec1) Class 3 1200 m
LOADED, which was fractious after being loaded, turned its head to the left just prior to the start being effected and consequently was slow to begin.
WONDERFUL TIGER was also slow to begin.
HAPPY BAO BEI shifted out on jumping and lost ground.
Passing the 100 Metres, LOADED shifted out off the heels of CALIFORNIA ASPAR and inconvenienced HAPPY BAO BEI.
VICTORY MACHINE raced wide and without cover throughout the event.]
When questioned, C Y Ho (CALIFORNIA ASPAR) and Apprentice H N Wong (HAPPY BAO BEI) were questioned in respect of their riding of their mounts in the early and middle stages. C Y Ho stated that he was instructed to go forward on CALIFORNIA ASPAR and to lead if possible, but if the opportunity presented itself to find cover behind the lead, he should avail himself of that position. He said he rode CALIFORNIA ASPAR positively in the early stages and when he realized that there were four horses vying for the lead, he steadied CALIFORNIA ASPAR and ascertained whether he could take a trailing position behind the leading horses. He said however that when he did this JOLLY CONVERGENCE, which was racing to his inside and in a four wide position, was steadied and shifted back in to take up a three wide trailing position behind VICTORY MACHINE. He said as a consequence his mount was left racing four wide and without cover and as he did not believe it was still viable for him to find a trailing position, he then pressed forward and was hopeful of crossing VICTORY MACHINE which was being steadied by its rider after the 900 Metres. He said however that when he improved to the outside of VICTORY MACHINE, that horse then improved underneath CALIFORNIA ASPAR which prevented him from crossing and which forced him then to steady his mount and shift in behind VICTORY MACHINE. Apprentice Wong advised that as HAPPY BAO BEI was ridden patiently at its last start and performed below expectations, he had specific instructions from its outside barrier to lead. He said in accordance with his instructions he rode HAPPY BAO BEI vigorously in the early stages, however, the horse was slow to muster speed. He said he continued to ride HAPPY BAO BEI along rounding the first turn and pursued a forward position as he was instructed to do. He said however that HAPPY BAO BEI was not able to show sufficient speed to cross runners to his inside and his mount was left extremely wife and without cover along the Back Straight and soon afterwards came under pressure. Apprentice Wong was advised that whilst the Stewards appreciated that he was endeavouring to adhere to his instructions, in this instance he should have desisted from pressing forward well prior to the 600 Metres and at least have explored the opportunity to try and find a position closer to the rail which would have afforded his mount with more of an opportunity to close off the race.
A veterinary inspection of INTREPIC immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of INTREPIC, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, INTREPIC will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
IRON BOY, BREEDERS’ STAR and PEACE N PROSPERITY were sent for sampling.
Race: 6 (658) FRENCH RACING & BREEDING COMMITTEE HANDICAP Class 4 1200 m
On arrival at the Start, it was noted that MASTER VIKING had lost its left front plate. After this plate was refitted, MASTER VIKING was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
After being slow to begin, WAH MAY BABY failed to show any speed in the early and middle stages despite being hard ridden and subsequently became detached from the field. A veterinary inspection of WAH MAY BABY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of WAH MAY BABY, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, WAH MAY BABY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
From a wide barrier, STARLIGHT was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
When being steadied to allow BUMBLE BAY to cross on the first turn at the 1000 Metres, VITAL SPRING got its head up and proved difficult to settle. VITAL SPRING continued to race ungenerously and had to be checked away from the heels of BUMBLE BABY soon after entering the Back Straight at the 900 Metres. When VITAL SPRING was checked, GOAL FOR GOLD, which was following, was steadied in consequence. SILVER SPUN, which was following GOAL FOR GOLD, was also checked and shifted out, resulting in FOX SUNTER being hampered. After the race, O Doleuze stated that VITAL SPRING, which was wearing blinkers for the first time, raced fiercely and was difficult to manage in the early and middle stages.
After leaving the 700 Metres, GOLDEN CHOPSTICKS and SILVER SPUN raced tight as SILVER SPUN established a position one horse off the rail. This resulted in GOLDEN CHOPSTICKS racing wide and without cover from this stage of the race.
Soon after straightening, VITAL SPRING was shifted in abruptly away from the heels of BUMBLE BABY to obtain clear running. GOAL FOR GOLD, which was racing to the inside of VITAL SPRING, was inconvenienced.
After being unable to proceed into tight running between SIGHT SEEING and MASTER VIKING which shifted out under pressure near the 100 Metres, STARLIGHT was directed to the inside of the heels of MASTER VIKING to continue improving.
Z Purton reported that SILVER SPUN felt awkward in its action after the race. A veterinary inspection of SILVER SPUN immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SILVER SPUN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of GOAL FOR GOLD and SIGHT SEEING immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

JETWINGS began very awkwardly, shifted out, bumped the hindquarters of SUPER TURBO and lost ground.
On jumping, ROMANTIC CASH and HIT THE BID were crowded for room between PREMIERE and SKY HERO, both of which shifted ground.
SKY HERO lost its left front plate after the 1000 Metres.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, JETWINGS momentarily raced in restricted room inside BLOCKER DEE.
SEA JADE made the Home Turn awkwardly and lay out.
Throughout the race, SKY HERO travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. A veterinary inspection of SKY HERO immediately following the race found that horse to have bled from both nostrils.
When questioned, D Whyte stated that JETWINGS did not let down as he thought it would when placed under pressure and over the concluding stages felt short in its action. A veterinary inspection of JETWINGS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, JETWINGS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned, Apprentice K K Chiong stated that she had been instructed to ride MOLLY’S JADE STAR in a forward position which is consistent with the manner in which she had previously ridden the horse. She said however that despite being hard ridden in the early stages MOLLY’S JADE STAR was unable to muster speed, was inclined to lay in and consequently settled back in the field. She said she chose then to ride in a manner to have the horse balanced and when brought to the outside in the Straight, MOLLY’S JADE STAR finished off the race satisfactorily. She added after the race she advised the connections that MOLLY’S JADE STAR may now be better suited in races over distances longer than the 1200 Metres of tonight’s event.
SUPER TURBO and BLOCKER DEE were sent for sampling.
Race: 8 (660) ARC DE TRIOMPHE CHAMPIONS HANDICAP (Sec2) Class 3 1200 m
On arrival at the Start, Z Purton expressed concern regarding the action of MYTHICAL EMPEROR. MYTHICAL EMPEROR was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said, after the necessary consultations, that the horse was suitable to race.
HO HO HORSE shifted out at the start and made contact with TRAVEL DATUK.
After beginning awkwardly, HERO LOOK lost ground soon after the start when steadied away from the heels of OUR HERO which shifted out.
Soon after the start, RIGHT HONOURABLE was awkwardly placed outside the heels of WONDERFUL JOURNEY.
From the outside barrier, SHARP HUNTER was steadied soon after the start and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
Throughout the race, OUR HERO travelled wide and without cover.
Z Purton reported that at the entrance to the Back Straight near the 900 Metres, MYTHICAL EMPEROR faltered when it appeared to be galloped on by EXTREMELY FUN. He said following this incident MYTHICAL EMPEROR did not feel entirely comfortable in its action. He said prior to the Home Turn he shifted MYTHICAL EMPEROR out from behind WONDERFUL JOURNEY to improve and placed the horse under pressure, however, MYTHICAL EMPEROR would not stretch out and as he had concerns that there might be something amiss with the horse, he ceased riding it out and eased it down from the 200 Metres. A veterinary inspection of MYTHICAL EMPEROR immediately following the race found that horse to have sustained a cut to the right hock. Given the circumstances, the Stewards ruled that MYTHICAL EMPEROR must perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
A veterinary inspection of EXTREMELY FUN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
BEST STEP and WONDERFUL JOURNEY were sent for sampling.
