Hugh Bowman took a starting winning double and then added a third win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday winning the first two races on the Australian Turf Club’s seven race programme and then the fourth.
First up Bowman won the TAB Rewards Handicap (1400m) for two-year-old’s with Sambro and second the Bowermans Office Furniture Handicap (1400m) for maiden three-year-old’s with Loveletter. For the trio Bowman rode Jeff Englebrecht's three-year-old Tickets filly Difficult To Get to win the Schweppes Bm 67 Handicap (1000m).
The Waller trained Sambro had been knocking on the door for his maiden win and on Wednesday in his fourth start he emphatically claimed it with Bowman sending the Fastnet Rock colt forward entering the main straight.
Sambro not only held the field at bay, but went away over the final stages for a 1 3/4L win over Icon Of Dubai and Padraig (NZ) showing he is a developing type.
Next Bowman timed the run of John Thompson’s three-year-old maiden filly Loveletter to the metre. The Encosta de Lago filly is another who has benefited from maturity with this her fourth race start after two earlier placings and a fourth.
Bowman settled her in seventh and three out as they went down the river side and then he went four wide with her into the main straight. Loveletter cruised to the leaders racing in the middle of the track and seemed to be ready to go past with ease.
However in the end Bowman had to coax Loveletter (57.5kg) forward and over the final 10m he asked her to lift which she then did well.
The winning margin was a head over Duchess Pedrille (Hinchinbrook) (carried 53kg) and apprentice Andrew Adkins with a half-head to Aurora Rose (Northern Meteor) (carried 53kg) and apprentice Rachel King.
The time was 1.23.82 on the Good 3 track with the final 600m in 34.95. Loveletter paid $3.00 on fixed odds and $2.90 on the tote.
“The penny has not dropped yet to put them away. But she got the job done and it was a good win,” said Thompson.
“We will keep going through the grades and she is a nice filly going forward.”
Bowman agreed that Loveletter had yet to learn about winning but he had praise for her.
“She does not know how to go through her gears yet. She is an improving type and a nice type hard to miss in the yard,” he said.
Loveletter is out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Tabasco Kitten and the four starts, win and two placings have earned stakes of $36,575 for the Joy Luck Syndicate.
Bowman now had 59 winners in the Sydney premiership, not that far behind Brenton Avdulla with 68.5, in case he wants to make a run for the lead to add to his achievements this season.
