Champion jockey Hugh Bowman has been confirmed as the replacement rider for Illustrious Lad in Friday's Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
The Peter Gelagotis-trained sprinter's regular jockey Anthony Darmanin isn't able to maintain his association with the horse after he was suspended for 11 meetings for his ride aboard the Gelagotis-trained Mourinho in the Yarra Valley Cup on Sunday.
Gelagotis' brother and Racing Manager Manny said Illustrious Lad worked impressively at Moe on Monday morning and had come through his luckless 11th placing in the Newmarket Handicap well.
"I don't want to relive that (the Newmarket), it was a horrible watch and we got it wrong on the day but he's come through the run really well," Gelagotis told Racing.com.
"He had a nice gallop (Monday) morning and worked really well.
"He didn't get a chance to have a crack at them at Flemington and I think if he handles Moonee Valley then he'll be very competitive."
Illustrious Lad hasn't raced at Moonee Valley since he finished unplaced in his third career start as a three-year-old but Gelagotis said the son of I Am Invincible was a much more seasoned racehorse this time around.
"I expect he'll handle the track pretty well," he said.
"It's an important Group 1 and he needs to put his hand up and keep progressing the right way but I believe he'll be competitive."
