Trained by Peter McKay at Matamata, Estrato (2 B. C. Stratum – Lung Tah, by Quest For Fame) had to withstand an inquiry before being confirmed the winner of the $45,000, Listed, Wentwood Grange Stakes, for two-year-olds over 1100-metres, at Te Rapa on Saturday.
Across the line first under rider Samantha Spratt, finishing half-a-length to the good of Lady Chapel (King’s Chapel), Estrato then had proceedings lodged against him by both the second and fifth placed horses. The latter being the race favourite Savabill (Savabeel).
Following the hearing, places stood as they past the post.
Third in the race was Anabandana (Anabaa), with the 1100m covered in 1:04.99 on good footing.
A fine judge at sales time, McKay purchased Estrato as a yearling for $95,000 from the draft of Widden Stud at the 2010 Magic Millions Premier Sale and races the compact colt with his wife Kim McKay, and Trevor Luke.
Although a laidback and lazy kind of horse according to McKay, Estrato has won two of his four starts, and Spratt felt he was a touch unlucky when fourth at his previous start in the listed Welcome Stakes at Riccarton.
Spratt said she had plenty of horse underneath her but no room close to home.
