Race analysis and race selections for Monday's racing at Kranji

RACE 1

The opening race of 2018 is not an easy puzzle to solve, but some early new year’s dollars can be had with the Daniel Meagher-trained
ELISE (7) who last year was placed three times of marks of 47 and 48 and has been seen to work well ahead of this run. He can front run and is ideally drawn in gate 2. TYPHON (8) was not beaten far when last seen over slightly further and the return to 1200m can see him play a prominent role. Stablemate of the top pick is PARAGON STAR (11), yet to win in 13 but did run a better race last time out in maiden company and this is not an overly strong contest, though the wide barrier makes things a little tougher. GREY GATSBY (5) was 4th behind the selection way back in October 2015! But is still lightly-raced and that piece of form could give him a rough place chance here.

RACE 2

GLAMOROUS (1)
has been very much improved in his last couple of efforts including a placing behind a smart type on Gold Cup day, tuned up with a recent trial when fifth and the 3kg claim is a definite bonus. LONHRO GOLD (3) with more time and raceday experience certainly looks good enough to be a quartet chance in this, has a bit more weight to contend with here. EDDIE GRAY (9) was an impressive trial winner with blinkers back in November (however for this run sports the crossover noseband) from the Stephen Gray stable by 1L, he went round well fancied ($13) in his only raceday start and was inconvenienced in the run – don’t overlook him. KISS YOUR SONG (10) from the Shane Baertschiger stable disappointed in his only start as a 2YO when backed, but showed more maturity last time when running a handy third closing off smartly.

RACE 3

The form of
MR CLINT’S (4) maiden win is working out to be nice enough form with winners coming out of the race since and back to 1200m with a good barrier certainly give him every chance of a second win. MAGIC WAND (3) never went a yard on softer ground last time out and can be forgiven for that run; he now sports a tongue tie which he wore when making a successful debut for Bruce Marsh and should leave that poor run behind him here. LADRONE (2) seems to have rotten luck with the barriers but always runs a solid race and the same can be hoped for again and the quartet is complete with TAICHI BELT (8) who will ensure some of the early tempo if overcoming a poor draw under Michael Rodd.

RACE 4

SATELLITE WINNER (11)
made an eye-catching debut at massive odds behind Clokey in November, having missed the start he finished off in 23.65 to take 5th place at $518,. Sadly, I don’t think we will get those sorts of odds here but he does look up to the task having trialled okay since. ABLE PINS (6) has not quite put it altogether in two runs to-date but his trials with blinkers have suggested he can step up now in headgear here. EL TORDILLO (2) was made plenty of use of last time over 1600m but was far from disgraced and even from a wide gate he can play a part in the finish now back in trip and DYNAMIC EAGLE (9) is another back in distance and having gone off skinny odds and was disappointing on debut, there might just be a bit of value to be had now with pacifiers and tongue tie on first time.

RACE 5

EASTERN VICTORY (4) produced a much improved performance last time in a Maiden race over this distance at a big quote; 23.50 quickest last 400m, a similar effort sees him go close. ROCKET FIGHTER (6) has some patchy form but wasn’t far away last start, could be a multiples chance if he gets the right run. AMISTAD (8) has some winning form next to his name a couple of runs back, got caught on the inside last start on a real testing Polytrack, twice a winner on Turf. ENERGIZER (13) should he get into the field would be a chance on what he produced in a Maiden race last start to run into third placing from a long way back.

RACE 6

ELITE INVINCIBLE (1)
was ultra-impressive at his Singapore debut winning by 2L at this 1200m trip, he looks a smart 3YO going forward into this year and has a 2kg claiming rider. MAGIC CITY (2) wasn’t at all fancied last start and ran up to that price, if he brings his A-game he is a top for player for sure. CAPTAIN JAMIE (8) has a lovely way of going, he is absolutely still on the up and was impressive when winning a trial during the week by 3.3L for Ricardo Le Grange. Winkers go on first time, shadow roll comes off. DUSSELDORF (11) with Daniel Moor riding has only had two runs in Singapore, both at short prices having been beaten. Has trialed nicely with blinkers on 21/12, shadow roll comes off.

RACE 7

Having not debuted until September,
TESORO PRIVADO (7) made giant strides in the 2017 season and a recent trial win suggests he can continue in the same form in 2018 with an attractive weight of 53kg to carry. LIM’S REGARD (9) saw out 2017 with a strong finishing 4th (24.14) and will relish the step-up in trip, he can give the top pick most to think about. ARES (1) finished 2017 off well with a nice win on softer ground and should be there or thereabouts and JUSTICE FAIR (10) is nicely weighted and has some sound form to his name.

RACE 8

AMAZING MAN (1)
has run all top four efforts in his last four assignments for Saimee Jumaat, went close last start at $13 carrying 53kgs, has a carded weight of 57kgs for this run. PANACHE (3) for Lee Freedman was seen trialling well during the week when making good ground to be beaten 1L into third, one to watch. CAI POH WANG (5) looked to have just run out of steam last start in the final 100m in a Kranji D 1800m, more suited to this kind of trip. YAYA PAPAYA (6) has run all right recently placing fourth in his last three runs; he faced a decent line-up last start and shouldn’t be discounted with Ryan Curatolo riding.

RACE 9

WIMBLEDON (1)
is the top weight in the race after a solid third placing last start, trialled well when second on 21/12, beaten 1.5L. NOVA SWISS (2) was beaten a short margin in a trial for third placing during the week, winner of six from thirteen must be respected at this course/distance. NOVA STRIKE (4) won the Colonial Chief Stakes at his last start, drops back to 1200m where he has only been unplaced on four occasions from eleven starts. DISTINCTIVE DARCI (8) gets in with a luxurious weight of 52kgs against a quality line-up and very rarely runs a bad race on the Polytrack.

RACE 10

COUNTRY WARRIOR (1)
showed an improved performance last start at big odds, ran through the line and could be improved in a race that isn’t strong. FIRST LIGHT (3) has always gone around at odds of less than $28 in his five starts and trialled well enough to be a player in this line up. SCORPIO (4) has been good enough to lay claim to back-to-back victories recently since joining Michael Clements, should be respected with the 2kg claim. IMPERIAL FALLS (6) is only having his third start in Singapore for Cliff Brown; the well-bred type was good enough to win in Australia and can measure up here with Michael Rodd.

RACE 11

KINGSMAN (1)
was arguably beaten in a head bobber by one of Singapore’s toughest horses (Elusive Emperor) on the final day of the year and given he has plenty of class, he is selected to come out on top here for the champion trainer and is a 4yo to follow in 2018. BE BEE (3) is unbeaten at this trip on both surfaces and with a Group 2 success as a 2yo would pose the biggest threat to Kingsman here. SPLINTER (2) makes his debut for Ricardo Le Grange here and trialled very nicely on Boxing Day and can easily make an impact in this race back over 1200m on turf. AOTEAROA (6) goes really fresh and isn’t over burdened by 54.5kg given her diminutive stature; she should run a nice race.
