Passing the 500 Metres, SAVANNAH WIND was bumped by HAPPY ROCKY which shifted out to improve.
Apprentice H T Mo (PREMIUM CHAMPION) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 350 Metres he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of EXCELLENCE, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. Apprentice Mo was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Monday, 1 January 2018 and to expire on Monday, 8 January 2018 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Apprentice Mo’s good race riding record.
After the race, A Badel stated that SAVANNAH WIND travelled only fairly throughout the race, however, did not respond to his riding in the Straight and finished off one-paced. He added that at this stage of its career SAVANNAH WIND may be better suited at the Happy Valley circuit. A veterinary inspection of SAVANNAH WIND immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

After beginning awkwardly, GENERAL O’REILLY was shifted across behind runners from a wide barrier soon after the start to obtain cover.
Despite being hard ridden in the early stages, DOUBLE POINT failed to muster speed.
After passing the winning post on the first occasion, DYNAMIC LIONS commenced to prove difficult to settle, shifted in and brushed the hindquarters of FIVE STARS AGENT, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. A short distance later, DYNAMIC LIONS and WINNINGLI, which was shifting in, bumped, resulting in DYNAMIC LIONS being hampered and WINNINGLI becoming unbalanced. DYNAMIC LIONS then refused to settle for some distance and got its head up when continuing to race keenly.
Approaching the 1200 Metres, RHODE ASSASSIN (N Callan) was hampered when racing tight inside GENTLEMEN (Apprentice M F Poon) which shifted in. Apprentice Poon was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in at this stage, resulting in unnecessary contact between both horses. N Callan was also spoken to regarding his left elbow being extended away from his body during this incident.
On the turn near the 700 Metres, GOLDEN KID was steadied when racing tight inside DIAMOND FRIENDS which, after initially laying in and away from SOUL ACHIEVER, was then taken in slightly by that horse which at this stage improved inside the heels of GENTLEMEN which had commenced to give ground.
At the 150 Metres, RAINBOW GOLD shifted out under pressure and made contact with the hindquarters of JIMSON THE FAMOUS.
Throughout the race, WINNINGLI travelled wide and without cover.
DYNAMIC LIONS also raced wide and without cover throughout the race and in the Straight gave ground. A veterinary inspection of DYNAMIC LIONS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. The performance of DYNAMIC LIONS, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, DYNAMIC LIONS will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
DIAMOND FRIENDS and VICTORY FOLLOW ME were sent for sampling.

Race: 5 (294) TAI TAN HANDICAP Class 4 1400 m
On arrival at the Start, it was noted that MARQULA had lost its right front plate. After this plate was replaced, MARQULA was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
Just prior to the start being effected, BRILLIANT DREAM lunged at the front gates, resulting in the gates opening marginally just prior to the remaining gates opening. This resulted in BRILLIANT DREAM beginning awkwardly and losing ground.
On jumping, NAMJONG PLUS lost ground when crowded for room between REMARKABLE and GREAT SON.
BEAUTY DAY began awkwardly after making contact with the outside gate on jumping.
WINNING SUPREME and SPICY KAKA made contact at the start.
From a wide barrier, MARQULA was steadied and shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Approaching the 1200 Metres, SPORTS MASTER commenced to prove difficult to settle and shifted out away from the heels of SPICY KAKA. SPORTS MASTER continued to race very keenly and at the 1100 Metres got its head up and shifted in, making contact with BETTER CHOICE which was hampered. A short distance later, as SPICY KAKA, which when racing keenly, was steadied away from the heels of CARE FREE PRINCE (Apprentice M F Poon), that horse shifted out, resulting in SPORTS MASTER, which continued to prove very difficult to manage, being checked when taken out towards the heels of REMARKABLE. As CARE FREE PRINCE and WINNING SUPREME (Apprentice H T Mo) steadied the pace in the lead, SPICY KAKA, BEAUTY DAY and BETTER CHOICE had to be steadied and were hampered. Apprentices Poon and Mo were warned against the practice of slackening the tempo to any marked degree which makes it difficult for the riders of horses in a trailing position adjusting to the change in pace.
For some distance approaching the 900 Metres, BRILLIANT DREAM got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of BETTER CHOICE.
Passing the 300 Metres, NAMJONG PLUS shifted in, causing some inconvenience to EASTERN PROWESS.

Passing the 300 Metres, DRAGON GENERAL was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MYTHICAL EMPEROR which commenced to give ground.
After passing the 200 Metres, DANCES WITH DRAGON (B Prebble), which was closing off the race strongly, made ground quickly to be near the heels of PABLOSKY which had commenced to come under pressure. As DANCES WITH DRAGON was shifted in marginally to avoid the heels of PABLOSKY, that horse made contact with BIG TIME BABY, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. DANCES WITH DRAGON then continued to improve to the inside of the heels of PABLOSKY, resulting in BIG TIME BABY being taken in and momentarily becoming awkward on the heels of WATER DIVINER which shifted out slightly. B Prebble was advised that the Stewards were affording him the benefit of the doubt in relation to this incident as his mount had made ground quickly to be awkwardly placed close to the heels of PABLOSKY and that WATER DIVINER had shifted out and had contributed in some way to the degree of interference suffered by BIG TIME BABY. B Prebble was nonetheless severely reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to exercise more care.
After the race, W M Lai reported that MYTHICAL EMPEROR made an abnormal breathing noise when placed under pressure and for this reason he did not test the horse over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of MYTHICAL EMPEROR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, MYTHICAL EMPEROR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of STRATHMORE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
HOT KING PRAWN and WATER DIVINER were sent for sampling.

A veterinary inspection of MULTI FACETS immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, MULTI FACETS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
INFINITY ENDEAVOUR, VICTORY MACHINE and MOST BEAUTIFUL were sent for sampling.

Race: 8 (297) PAK TAM CHUNG HANDICAP Class 3 1650 m
As the start was effected, VOLITATION (S Clipperton), which was fractious in the barriers, lifted its front feet off the ground, turned its head to the right and as a consequence missed the start. Jockey Clipperton reported following the race that after missing the start, VOLITATION, which was racing on the All Weather surface for the first time today, appeared uncomfortable racing back in the field and was disappointing. A veterinary inspection of VOLITATION immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
GLORIOUS PARTNERS shifted out at the start and made contact with ROMAN IMPERO.
On jumping, WILLIE WAY and LET US WIN were crowded for room between GAMECHANGERS which shifted in and DEJA VU which was taken out by DOLLAR REWARD.
From the outside barrier, SILVERFIELD was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
On the first turn near the 1500 Metres, VOLITATION was steadied away from the heels of LET US WIN which shifted in.
Near the 1400 Metres, DEJA VU got its head up and shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of DOLLAR REWARD.
Despite being hard ridden in the early and middle stages, SKY KING became detached from the field and finished distanced. A veterinary inspection of SKY KING immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. As this was the third occasion that SKY KING had become detached from the field in its four race starts this season, the Stewards ruled that that horse must perform satisfactorily in a series of consecutive barrier trials and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again. Trainer C Fownes however advised the Stewards that it is his intention to recommend to the owners of SKY KING that the horse be retired.
Upon entering the Back Straight near the 1100 Metres, BULLISH GLORY was momentarily crowded for room inside VOLITATION which shifted in slightly.
Just prior to the finishing line, T Berry, the rider of LET US WIN, was obliged to stop riding and straighten his mount which shifted in and raced tight against DOLLAR REWARD.
A veterinary inspection of DEJA VU immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, DEJA VU will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
SUNNY WIN and ROMAN IMPERO were sent for sampling.

Race: 9 (298) LONG KE HANDICAP Class 2 2000 m
CONSORT and EXULTANT bumped heavily at the start.
On jumping, SALTO OLIMPICO was crowded for room between HAPPILABABY which shifted in and DINOZZO which began awkwardly and shifted out. In this incident, S Clipperton, the rider of DINOZZO, became unbalanced, resulting in his left foot slipping from the stirrup iron. Jockey Clipperton was able to regain the use of his stirrup iron after passing the winning post on the first occasion.
Approaching the 1700 Metres, DINOZZO and CONSORT raced tight for a short distance inside HARBOUR MASTER which was soon after directed out to relieve the tightening. CONSORT then commenced to race keenly and made contact with DINOZZO after being checked away from the heels of EXULTANT.
For some distance after leaving the 1600 Metres, EXULTANT raced ungenerously and got its head up on a number of occasions. Then approaching the 1200 Metres, EXULTANT, which continued to race ungenerously, endeavoured to shift out from behind GONNA RUN, resulting in EXULTANT making contact with DINOZZO and those two horses racing tight for some distance and consequently becoming unbalanced. As a result of the contact with EXULTANT, DINOZZO was forced into a position wide and without cover at the 1100 Metres.
After leaving the 900 Metres, GOLDFIELD commenced to hang out when racing in the lead and made contact with SALTO OLIMPICO on a number of occasions, resulting in both those horses becoming unbalanced.
Approaching the 600 Metres, when GOLDFIELD bumped SALTO OLIMPICO, that horse shifted out and in turn bumped the hindquarters of PRAWN BABA. GOLDFIELD continued to hang out rounding the Home Turn and after passing the 500 Metres became awkwardly placed on the heels of SALTO OLIMPICO. A veterinary inspection of GOLDFIELD immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The racing manners of GOLDFIELD, which subsequently finished tailed out, were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, GOLDFIELD will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Rounding the Home Turn, DINOZZO was brushed and taken wider by SERGEANT TITANIUM which shifted out to improve.
GENERAL SHERMAN had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
From on straightening until after passing the 200 Metres, CONSORT was badly held up and unable to improve. When CONSORT shifted out into clear running near the 150 Metres, HARBOUR MASTER, which was giving ground, was steadied.
From the 300 Metres until passing the 200 Metres, ROCKETEER was held up for clear running.
For some distance after the 200 Metres, when endeavouring to improve between PRAWN BABA and SERGEANT TITANIUM, ROCKETEER was impeded due to SERGEANT TITANIUM shifting in slightly under pressure.
When questioned, T Berry stated that he had firm instructions from Trainer J Moore to ride HARBOUR MASTER positively in the early stages and to lead if able, but if unable to lead, to be as forward as possible. He said he had ridden HARBOUR MASTER in a 1200 Metre barrier trial on 3 December 2017 and on that occasion he had ridden the horse vigorously in the early stages and it did not show sufficient speed to be able to take up a forward position. He said similarly in today’s race, despite riding the horse vigorously from the barriers and slapping it down the shoulder with the whip, HARBOUR MASTER was unable to muster sufficient speed to be able to cross runners to its inside. He said passing the winning post on the first occasion there was a line of at least six horses to his inside and as he felt that HARBOUR MASTER did not have the necessary pace to be able to cross those runners, he elected to settle his mount behind runners and find cover as he felt pressing forward would have resulted in HARBOUR MASTER racing extremely wide and given no opportunity to close off the race. He said by taking this option, he left himself with an opportunity to make a forward move later in the race if the pace slackened. He said when attempting to shift in behind SALTO OLIMPICO approaching the 1700 Metres, he received a call from riders to his inside who were in some difficult and was therefore not able to shift in any further at that stage of the race. T Berry added that approaching the 1600 Metres when the tempo appeared to reduce, he took the opportunity then to ride HARBOUR MASTER forward in order to gain a more prominent position in the field and in an endeavour to comply with his instructions as best as he was able. He stated that along the Back Straight when racing with cover behind SALTO OLIMPICO, he followed that horse forward to be just behind the leading division, however, when SALTO OLIMPICO crossed into the lead, HARBOUR MASTER was then left without cover and soon after came under pressure. He said from the 900 Metres HARBOUR MASTER commenced to give ground despite being ridden along and subsequently finished near the tail of the field. Assistant Trainer C W Wong, in the absence of Mr Moore who was overseas, confirmed that the primary instruction to Jockey Berry was to lead, but if unable to lead, to be as prominent as possible.
When questioned, B Prebble stated that, from the outside barrier, he was asked to ride PRAWN BABA positively and assume a prominent position, hopefully in the first four or five runners. He said in the run to the winning post on the first occasion when racing to the outside of HARBOUR MASTER which was being hard ridden, he quickly assessed that the solid early pace, along with a number of runners vying for leading positions to his inside would have resulted in PRAWN BABA being forced extremely wide if he continued to push forward. He said therefore he steadied his mount after the 1800 Metres and took cover behind HARBOUR MASTER. Jockey Prebble stated that the circumstances of the race in the early stages forced him to deviate from his instructions, but he felt that he had provided PRAWN BABA with the best opportunity to save ground by taking this option. He added that when the pace slackened near the 1400 Metres, he shifted out and improved to obtain cover behind HARBOUR MASTER as that horse improved its position in the field. He said when HARBOUR MASTER was unable to take him any further into the race, he shifted out from behind that horse at the 900 Metres and continued to press forward on PRAWN BABA as Trainer J Size had impressed upon him that the horse is rather one-paced and he wished for PRAWN BABA to make the race a proper staying test. Jockey Prebble added that PRAWN BABA, after taking the lead on straightening and maintaining that position in the early part of the Straight, came under pressure and weakened over the latter stages of the race.
A veterinary inspection of DINOZZO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
EXULTANT and CONSORT were sent for sampling.

Race: 10 (299) PAK TAM AU HANDICAP Class 3 1400 m
SACRED IBIS began only fairly.
HAPPY JOURNEY began awkwardly, resulting in its rider, K C Ng, becoming unbalanced. As a consequence, HAPPY JOURNEY then shifted in, resulting in APOLLO’S CHOICE being hampered when crowded onto CALCULATION which was also inconvenienced.
MCQUEEN began awkwardly and made contact with YOUNG EMPIRE.
From wide barriers, SACRED IBIS, HARD BALL GET and BOMBAY BLITZ were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
A Badel (TANG FLEMING) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1100 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of MCQUEEN, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. A Badel was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Saturday, 13 January 2018 and to expire on Thursday, 18 January 2018 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Badel’s good race riding record.
Approaching the 1000 Metres, ULTIMATE GLORY became awkward close to the heels of BOMBAY BLITZ after being taken in by STAR OF YAN OI.
On the first turn after passing the 900 Metres, HARD BALL GET was steadied when racing tight to the inside of ULTIMATE GLORY which in turn was racing tight inside STAR OF YAN OI (O Doleuze). O Doleuze was advised to ensure that he leaves sufficient racing room for runners to his inside in similar circumstances.
APOLLO’S CHOICE was badly held up for clear running from soon after straightening until near the 50 Metres. As a result, APOLLO’S CHOICE was unable to be fully tested.
The Stewards inquired into an incident near the 300 Metres where DOUBLE VALENTINE was severely checked when tightened for room between CALCULATION (S Clipperton) and CALIFORNIA JOY (A Sanna). It was established that near the 350 Metres CALCULATION shifted in and bumped with DOUBLE VALENTINE, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced and DOUBLE VALENTINE shifting in marginally. At this stage, CALIFORNIA JOY was being positioned to improve between DOUBLE VALENTINE and YOUNG EMPIRE where there was not quite a run. Approaching the 300 Metres, CALCULATION again shifted in marginally and raced tight against DOUBLE VALENTINE which in turn raced tight with CALIFORNIA JOY which was endeavouring to improve between DOUBLE VALENTINE and YOUNG EMPIRE where there was still doubtful room. After leaving the 300 Metres, DOUBLE VALENTINE was severely checked as CALCULATION remained racing tight to its outside and CALIFORNIA JOY shifted to the outside of the heels of YOUNG EMPIRE to fully establish a run outside that horse. In all the circumstances, the Stewards considered that both S Clipperton and A Sanna should be severely reprimanded for contributing to the interference to DOUBLE VALENTINE. S Clipperton was advised that he should have straightened his mount sooner than he did on this occasion. A Sanna was advised to exercise due care when attempting runs where there is doubtful room.
After leaving the 300 Metres, BOMBAY BLITZ was bumped by ULTIMATE GLORY (N Rawiller) which shifted out to obtain clear running. HAPPY JOURNEY, which was racing to the outside of the heels of BOMBAY BLITZ, was inconvenienced as a consequence. N Rawiller will be advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that TANG FLEMING was lame in its left hind leg. Before being allowed to race again, TANG FLEMING will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of CALCULATION immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
APOLLO’S CHOICE, CALIFORNIA JOY and EXPERTO CREDE were sent for sampling.
