Race: 1 (282) URANUS HANDICAP Class 5 1000 m
At the time of declaration, C Schofield notified a probable overweight of 1 lb in respect of BLISS CARTEL allocated weight of 114 lbs. C Schofield then weighed out 2 lbs overweight and on return to scale was found to have weighed in at 117 lbs. As Jockey Schofield weighed in 2 lbs over the weight notified at the time of declaration, he was fined the sum of $7,000.
HAPPY OUT THERE was slow to begin.
WHISTLE UP and FAIR COMMENT began only fairly.
From a wide barrier, WORLD CITY was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
IDYLLIC WIND was badly held up for clear running from on straightening until passing the 250 Metres.
Right on the finishing line, FAIR COMMENT was steadied when improving towards the heels of WINFULL PATROL.
For the majority of the race, BLISS CARTEL travelled wide and without cover.
Throughout the race, EVER STRONG travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground.
O Doleuze, the rider of the winner, WINFULL PATROL, was spoken to regarding his having made a celebratory gesture prior to the finishing line given the winning margin of a short head.
A veterinary inspection of EVER STRONG and ORIENTAL FANTASIA immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of HIGHLAND DRAGON immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer” which had previously been reported.
WINFULL PATROL and GLORY HORSIE were sent for sampling.

Race: 2 (283) JUPITER HANDICAP (Sec2) Class 4 1200 m
As the start was effected, WONDERFUL TIGER became fractious and lifted its front feet off the ground, resulting in the horse losing a considerable amount of ground. Although the starting gate handler who was attending WONDERFUL TIGER had hold of the rein at the time the start was effected, the Stewards were satisfied that the starting gate handler was assisting the horse and in no way prevented it from beginning on terms with the field. Having regard to WONDERFUL TIGER’s previous record in respect of its barrier manners and the amount of ground lost in this incident, the Stewards ruled that that horse must barrier trial satisfactorily prior to being permitted to race again.
JUNZI was crowded for room on jumping between LOOK ERAS and SONIC FIGHTER which was taken out by LOVE CHUNGHWA.
From the outside barrier, BUOYANT BOY was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Passing the 1100 Metres, LOVE CHUNGHWA was bumped by JUNZI which improved to be racing tight inside the heels of DOCTORS DELIGHT.
Making the turn near the 600 Metres, SONIC FIGHTER and SPRING WIN raced tight.
Passing the 600 Metres, ALL YOU KNOW became unbalanced after brushing the running rail. ALL YOU KNOW then shifted out and was awkwardly placed inside the heels of SONIC FIGHTER. In this incident, ALL YOU KNOW lost ground, resulting in LOVE CHUNGHWA being hampered in consequence.
Apprentice M F Poon (KIROV) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that at the entrance to the Home Straight he directed his mount out from behind FLYING FORCE in an attempt to improve between that horse and PEACE ON EARTH where running did not exist, causing KIROV to bump heavily with PEACE ON EARTH which resulted in that horse becoming unbalanced and being unnecessarily hampered, and further that after being unable to improve between FLYING FORCE and PEACE ON EARTH, KIROV struck the heels of FLYING FORCE, causing that horse to be dragged down behind and become badly unbalanced. Apprentice Poon was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday, 7 January 2018 and to expire on Thursday, 11 January 2018 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In addition, Apprentice Poon was fined $25,000.
At the 250 Metres, SPRING WIN was momentarily awkwardly placed outside the heels of PEACE ON EARTH.
Near the 150 Metres, JUNZI was steadied when unable to improve between DOCTORS DELIGHT and SONIC FIGHTER which shifted out under pressure.
Passing the 150 Metres, LOVE CHUNGHWA was shifted in away from the heels of FLYING FORCE which was giving ground.
The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the prima facie view that an incident occurred near the 50 Metres which cast sufficient doubt on whether SPRING WIN should be declared the winner of the race. Subsequently K Teetan, the rider of second placed, PEACE ON EARTH, lodged a protest/objection against SPRING WIN (N Callan) being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount near the 50 Metres. After taking evidence from all parties concerned and after viewing the videos, the Stewards found that in the early part of the Straight SPRING WIN was racing behind PEACE ON EARTH and had improved its position passing the 100 Metres to race almost on terms with PEACE ON EARTH. It was further established that at the 50 Metres when SPRING WIN was only marginally behind PEACE ON EARTH, it shifted in and bumped PEACE ON EARTH, causing that horse to become unbalanced. Having regard to the manner in which both horses were finishing off the race and the proximity of the contact between the horses in relation to the winning post, the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had the contact between the two horses not have occurred, PEACE ON EARTH would have beaten SPRING WIN. Accordingly, the protest/objection was overruled and weighed-in was declared on the numbers semaphored by the Judge. At a subsequent inquiry, N Callan was severely reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mounts to prevent causing interference to other runners.
Over the concluding stages, WONDERFUL TIGER was awkwardly placed inside the heels of JUNZI.
Throughout the race, SPRING WIN travelled wide and without cover.
A veterinary inspection of FLYING FORCE and JUNZI immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
LOOK ERAS, SPRING WIN and PEACE ON EARTH were sent for sampling.

Race: 3 (284) SATURN HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1650 m
HAPPY AND HEALTHY and PERFECT CHOICE were crowded for room on jumping between SUN TOUCH and CALL ME AWESOME, both of which shifted ground. In this incident, CALL ME AWESOME became unbalanced when bumped by HAPPY AND HEALTHY.
From wide barriers, HAR HAR HEART and PEARL WARM WARM were steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
Near the 1300 Metres, CALL ME AWESOME was awkwardly placed inside the heels of MEGATRON which was steadied away from the heels of WAH MAY BABY (Apprentice H T Mo) which shifted in when not properly clear. Apprentice Mo was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is properly clear when shifting ground.
For some distance after the 450 Metres, CALL ME AWESOME was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MEGATRON.
In the early part of the Straight, HAR HAR HEART (M Chadwick) raced with its head on the side, lay out and was difficult to ride, resulting in HAR HAR HEART being awkwardly placed inside the heels of PERFECT CHOICE passing the 200 Metres. HAR HAR HEART continued to lay out and proved difficult to ride and passing the 100 Metres shifted out, resulting in PERFECT CHOICE, which was giving ground abruptly, being inconvenienced. HAR HAR HEART then continued to lay out, resulting in SUN TOUCH being crowded for room at the 50 Metres between HAR HAR HEART and WAY MAY BABY which shifted in marginally. Whilst acknowledging that HAR HAR HEART was proving very difficult to ride, nonetheless M Chadwick was warned for using the whip on the horse on two occasions in the right hand given the manner in which HAR HAR HEART was laying out. After this, M Chadwick was obliged to stop riding HAR HAR HEART and straighten his mount. Having regard to the manner in which the horses were finishing off the race and the half length margin between HAR HAR HEART and SUN TOUCH at the end of the race, the Stewards did not proceed to consider a protest/objection on behalf of the connections of SUN TOUCH. It should be noted that Z Purton, the rider of SUN TOUCH, did not lodge a protest/objection against HAR HAR HEART.
Approaching the 200 Metres, SUN TOUCH lay in and was awkwardly placed outside the heels of PERFECT CHOICE which was commencing to give ground.
Near the 100 Metres, PEARL WARM WARM was steadied when disappointed for running between HAPPY AND HEALTHY and GOLDEN SLEEP (K Teetan) which shifted out under pressure. K Teetan was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Close to the finishing line, GOLDEN SLEEP turned its head to the left and attempted to savage HAPPY AND HEALTHY. Having regard to the fact that this was GOLDEN SLEEP’s 37th race start in Hong Kong and the horse had not previously been reported to have attempted to savage another runner, Mr C H Yip, the trainer of GOLDEN SLEEP, was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse and should it offend again in a similar manner in future, further action would be taken. Mr Yip undertook to consider amending the horse’s gear before it races again. Due to GOLDEN SLEEP attempting to savage HAPPY AND HEALTHY, this resulted in Apprentice M F Poon, the rider of HAPPY AND HEALTHY, taking evasive action close to the finishing line which resulted in him not being able to ride the horse out all the way to the end of the race. CALL ME AWESOME, which was following GOLDEN SLEEP, was steadied away from the heels of that horse after GOLDEN SLEEP became unbalanced when corrected by its rider.
A veterinary inspection of CALL ME AWESOME immediately following the race found that horse to have bled from both nostrils.
A veterinary inspection of MEGATRON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
CALL ME AWESOME, HAR HAR HEART and SUN TOUCH were sent for sampling.

Making the turn after the 600 Metres, OPEN HOUSE shifted in and bumped the running rail of its own accord, resulting in the horse becoming unbalanced and losing ground.
Also making the turn after the 600 Metres, CONTRIBUTION got its head on the side and shifted out, resulting in the horse being severely checked away from the heels of STARLOT which was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MAGIC AGILITY which at this time came under pressure.
At the entrance to the Straight, NUMERO UNO was shifted in away from the heels of PRESIDENTPARAMOUNT to obtain clear running.
Throughout the race, MAGIC AGILITY travelled wide and without cover.
The performances of MAGIC AGILITY and TRIUMPHAL WIN, which finished tailed out, were considered unacceptable. After the 1400 Metres, SMART BABY and EVER LAUGH raced tight.

When questioned, Apprentice H T Mo stated that, from the outside barrier, he was instructed to shift CELESTIAL NOVA across behind runners in the early stages. He said he was also asked to improve his position in the Back Straight on CELESTIAL NOVA in an attempt to take up a more forward position as the tempo of a number of races run at Happy Valley tends to slow up during this period of the race. He said in accordance with his instructions he shifted CELESTIAL NOVA across behind runners in the early stages and then approaching the 1000 Metres commenced to ride his mount along to improve his position around the field. He said CELESTIAL NOVA, when being ridden along, was able to improve its position to race in the lead near the 600 Metres. He said after this CELESTIAL NOVA came under pressure rounding the Home Turn and then weakened in the Straight. Mr C S Shum, trainer of CELESTIAL NOVA, stated that he had instructed Apprentice Mo to improve his position in the Back Straight if he was able. He said, given the tempo of the race after the 1200 Metres, Apprentice Mo should have remained racing at the rear of the field as going forward at this time of the race, given the tempo of the race was inside standard, was not in the best interests of CELESTIAL NOVA. He added however that he may have not been explicit enough when giving his instructions to provide Apprentice Mo with sufficient scope to properly asses the tempo of the race before making the forward move on CELESTIAL NOVA. Mr Shum was told that, in the opinion of the Stewards, as an experienced trainer, he should have provided Apprentice Mo with less rigid instructions than he did on this occasion. He was advised that all riders, and in particular apprentice jockeys, must not be tied down to rigid instructions where they believe that they are not provided with the opportunity to exercise judgement and initiative to take into account the circumstances of the race. Apprentice Mo was advised that whilst the Stewards accepted that he had been given relatively strict instructions and that as an apprentice jockey, he is not expected to show the same level of judgement and initiative as are more senior riders who have considerably more experience, nonetheless he has ridden in a good many races both overseas and in Hong Kong and, in their opinion, his riding of CELESTIAL NOVA, irrespective of the instructions, lacked judgement and initiative given the tempo of the race at the relevant time. He was told that all jockeys in Hong Kong, irrespective of their status, are expected to ride their mounts in such a manner so that they are able to finish off their race as best as they are able.
A veterinary inspection of LEISURED FEET immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of SMART BABY immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SMART BABY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

B Prebble stated that when attempting a run inside EASY HEDGE, he considered that HO HO FEEL was staying on satisfactorily albeit it was not a winning chance in the race. He said however that after being disappointed for running, HO HO FEEL then weakened and did not respond to his riding. A veterinary inspection of HO HO FEEL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

A veterinary inspection of ANDOYAS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of ANDOYAS, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable.
