Jenkins on Monday halved in price to 5-1 and usurped Defi Du Seuil as favourite for the Unibet-backed Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham on Sunday as trainer Nicky Henderson trimmed down his squad of runners for a race that, surprisingly, he has never won.
Fred Winter second Divin Bere and Charli Parcs, sixth in the Triumph Hurdle when last seen, were not among the 23 taken forward and Henderson is represented by only Jenkins and Call Me Lord, who made a winning debut for the yard at Sandown in April.
One-time Supreme Novices' Hurdle favourite Jenkins had been popular in the betting in the morning and Henderson on Monday confirmed Jenkins, who has 10st to carry, as an intended runner in the £100,000 contest but added: "He's handicapped on his reputation."
That was not enough to stop the weight of money that carried Jenkins, on offer at 12-1 on Monday morning, to as short as 5-1 with some firms, although he is widely available at 6-1. That is the same general price as Triumph Hurdle hero Defi Du Seuil, with Boylesports biggest at 7-1.
William Hill were among those to shorten Jenkins (into 5-1 from 10) and spokesman Rupert Adams said: "There has been some serious money around for the Henderson-trained Jenkins and he's currently our worst result of the meeting."
The weights are still headed by The New One, whose BHA rating of 163 keeps ten of the remaining entrants out of the handicap and has only Defi Du Seuil and Ivanovich Gorbatov as the others set to carry 11st or more.
Cloudy Dream out of BetVictor Gold Cup
The Malcolm Jefferson-trained Cloudy Dream, last seen finishing second to Smad Place in the Old Roan Chase, was the most high-profile absentee from the 22 confirmations for Saturday's BetVictor Gold Cup.
Connections had warned that top weight and soft ground were not a combination they were likely to ask Cloudy Dream to face, but had stated that he would be confirmed at the five-day stage.
Top Gamble was left as the topweight, some 5lb ahead of ante-post favourite Kylemore Lough, who would be making his first start for Harry Fry. Tully East, Romain De Senam and Starchitect were other fancied types among the confirmations.
