Friday meeting preview

Friday meeting preview, selections, comments and odds.

Arguably the best weekend of racing on the Singapore calendar and while the $1.35 million Dester Singapore Gold Cup will get all the headlines come Monday, the EW Barker will kick things off in style on Friday.

And like the Gold Cup, the EW Barker is a handicap that gives everyone some hope and is often the launch pad for a promising WFA horse that gets in with a lightweight.

Stephen Gray won this race last year with LIM’S CRUISER on the minimum (and backed it up on Sunday with his first Gold Cup) and the astute Kiwi has two last start winners in this years field with TWICKENHAM on 55kg and GOLDEN CURL on 52.5kg.

Of the two, GOLDEN CURL appeals on both form and weight and the now 9YO could indeed have his day in the sun with his best work expected late.

The other last start winner in the race is the (now) Poly record holder over 1100m in POLE PARADISE and given he has won over 1400m on the turf, he could surprise with just 50kg to carry.

There are plenty of live hopes and ARAMCO looks well placed with 53kg from gate 3 and MR FANTASTIC is just too honest to leave out in what should be a cracking race.

Best Bets: (IFFRAGAL race 4, win), (HIKO YUNIKON race 2, value) and (DECRETO race 9, value).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 6 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9), race 7 (6, 7, 9 and 12), race 8 (3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13), race 9 (2 and 9).

Race 1
An extremely tough opener for punters with more than a handful of Class droppers who should improve on recent perceived poor form in better Company. SING ROULETTE is also resuming but this race looks perfect for a big run off the back of a good trial and he could get support with Juglall up from a fair gate. BLUE DIAMOND is also an interesting runner given his form looks hopeless, but his last run was an improvement and he is having his first start in the bottom grade so the market a good guide. ACROSS THE SEA and SOON YI two others that can win dropping to Class 5 while JACKS SECRET is in solid form and has to be respected but his maiden status is a concern. Keep LIM'S SIGNATURE safe from gate 3 as he pulled up not striding last start and his work late was good. Betting Strategy - look for value, SING ROULETTE each-way.
1 ACROSS THE SEA *** Gate a concern but form solid and drops to recent winning Class. Big show. 8.00
2 BLUE DIAMOND *** Improved effort last start and could be hard to hold out at first start in Class 5. 4.00
3 COUNTRY BOSS * Maiden who will appreciate Class 5 but query on the Poly. 33
4 GOLDEN SPARK * Another that will improve lengths in Class 5 but two wins in this Company have been over 1000m. 20
5 JACKS SECRET *** Hard to fault honest form but maiden status is a huge concern as is widest gate. 6.00
6 LIM'S SIGNATURE *** Returned not striding when running on strongly in similar affair last start. Keep safe. 12
7 SING ROULETTE *** Resuming in what is a very suitable race and recent trial suggests he can win. 4.00
8 SOON YI *** Another Class dropper who can win in what is a suitable race with best work expected late. 8.00
9 SUN SEEKER ** Yet to win in Singapore but placed this Company three starts back. 20
10 DELFYNE ** Did it tough last start so worth another look in this Company from better gate. 12
11 FUNKADELIC * Only battled last start and yet to place on the Poly. 33
12 RACING TALENT ** Form reads badly but gets blinkers back on and Rodd so look for improvement. 20
13 KING STEAD * Maiden who has shown glimpses but would need to make use of the inside alley to have a say. 33
14 MASTER BANGER ** Gate a concern but placed similar affair last start and can include in exotics. 20
Race 2
Absolutely nothing jumps off the page to win this Class 4 Poly dash and the market will be an excellent guide. But as it stands, SUPERSONICSURPRISE has the best recent form on the board and gets his chance. The wide gate is an obvious concern but Shafiq should go forward and he can figure with any luck in running. BIGDINERO could be the biggest threat. The 9YO hasn't won since 2014 but his effort after doing it tough last start suggests he has more to offer with gate 2 a factor. If the race is set up for a back marker, HIKO YUNIKON will be the one doing best work late while BOARD WALK will keep them all honest and ELITE GENERAL appreciates Class 4. Betting Strategy - watch the tote for any stable support, box 1, 2, 3, 4 and 10 in a trifecta.
1 ELITE GENERAL ** Form starting to read badly but will appreciate being back on the Poly and could improve with headgear removed. 20
2 SUPERSONICSURPRISE *** Backed up surprise win with very good effort suggesting he gives this a shake with luck from wide gate. 3.00
3 BOARD WALK ** Honest as a rule and appreciates gate 3 but should need a tad longer to show his best. 4.50
4 BIGDINERO *** Did it tough last start and effort good enough to follow from gate 2. 8.00
5 RAINBOW ROYAL * Looked to have every chance last start in similar affair and needs to find more. 20
6 LITTLE BIG MAN ** Resuming after a solid run of form and has placed at a rare Poly run early in his career so keep safe. 6.00
7 NATURAL IMPULSE * Recent form poor but won one of these three starts back when supported so market only guide. 33
8 GANNET * Freshened but should find this too short. 33
9 SPECIAL RAIN ** Should need easier to win but usually competitive on the Poly and a must for exotics. 12
10 HIKO YUNIKON *** Will get back from wide gate but should be motoring late in this field. Value. 10
11 HONOR * Will appreciate being back on the Poly from gate 1 but needs Class 5. 20
12 SUPERMART ** Another looking for Class 5 but in solid form and could figure in the mix at odds. 20
Race 3
SATTAR is the obvious pick in this Restricted Maiden and while we would love to find something to beat him, nothing jumps off the page to cause an upset. The problem is that we have been down this path at his previous four starts where the 3YO has been sent off as the odds-on favourite and has yet to win. He did do it tough last start and has trialled well since but the wide gate is of some concern here. Who beats him? Watch for support on the others but ARC TRIUMPH pulled up lame when putting in a solid effort on debut so he could show up while both CROWN DELIGHT and MONSTER ENERGY both improve with blinkers on and off respectively. Of the rest, SORBETA continues to trial well but his race form is a concern while two grey/roan US-bred 2YO's in CALL IT and WOODEN HEART could show up on debut. Betting Strategy - play with caution, so CROWN DELIGHT each-way.
1 SATTAR *** Picks himself but has the rare distinction of being beaten as the odds-on elect at all four starts. 1.80
2 BERLINETTA * Impossible on race form. 50
3 ARC TRIUMPH ** Pulled up lame after tough but solid run on debut. Will improve. 8.00
4 CROWN DELIGHT ** Showed nothing on debut but best trial was with blinkers so will improve with headgear added. 12
5 MONSTER ENERGY ** Resuming after very ordinary debut but recent trials sans blinkers good enough to give this a shake at odds. 20
6 SORBETA ** Resuming after two poor us but continues to show plenty at the trials. Keep safe. 6.00
7 TAUROS ** Improved at most recent trial when blinkers were added and expect solid debut. 12
8 HALLELUJAH ** Solid without being a threat but will battle away and can include in exotics in this field. 20
9 CALL IT ** American-bred 2YO who has trialled OK and worth a market watch on debut. 12
10 WOODEN HEART ** Another US-bred 2YO (similar colour too) who has shown enough at the trials to consider with Nunes up. 12
Race 4
A terrific maiden over the mile and while we are fairly keen on IFFRAGAL with the postage stamp weight, you can make a strong case for a handful of others including NEW SENSATION. The 4YO was handicapped 58kg but the use of a 4kg claimer looks a smart move and his form suggests he is in this for a very long way. But IFFRAGAL - who placed in the Juvenile Championship - ran on well against the bias last start over 1200m and the mile has always looked her caper so she gets her chance with Juglall up. AUSPICIOUS DAY has also been running on well against the bias and look well placed here from gate 2 while PARADOR showed more than enough last start to win a race like this but he does have a wide gate to overcome. TESORO PRIVADO another that also wins without surprising and keep GANGNAM CLASSIC safe at long odds. Betting Strategy - IFFRAGAL win.
1 NEW SENSATION *** Refuses to run a bad race but refuses to win. Gets his chance over the mile with 4kg claimer. 4.00
2 ACE HARBOUR ** Honest and will be running on at the business end. 12
3 GANGNAM CLASSIC ** Impossible on race form but had excuses when blinkers went on last start so worth another looks at odds. 33
4 DREAM BIG ** Just missed over the mile in Class 5 Company last start and should figure prominently in this. 7.00
5 PACIFIC PEARL * Just battling. 50
6 TESORO PRIVADO *** Honest and forward run expected. 8.00
7 PARADOR *** Drawn wide but showed more than enough last start to follow over the mile. 6.00
8 AUSPICIOUS DAY *** Has been running on well against the race bias at his last two starts and gets his chance here. 10
9 FORESTO ** Runs on when in the mood and could appreciate blinkers being removed. 20
10 YELLOW GOLD * No. 200
11 BANGKOK BOY * Needs to lift on efforts to date. 50
12 SEE NO EVIL ** Appreciates first up run and look for improvement at odds over the mile. 20
13 IFFRAGAL *** Disappointing not to have won one by now but ran on well last start and mile looks ideal. 4.00
Race 5
A terrible race and to be fair it may pay to play this one with care with the tote again going to be the best guide. You can make a case for SUPER EIGHT though as his form is solid and if Oscar can make use of gate 3, he could be hard to hold out. Of the rest, GOLDEN MILE may improve with blinkers, tongue-tie and M Rodd, HIGHLIGHT is honest enough to have some say while CASSIS OOLONG probably leads from the wide gate and could take some catching in this weak field. Keep GOLDEN COIN safe with best work expected late. Betting Strategy - not confident, SUPER EIGHT win.
1 LAND BELOW D WIND * Right Company but 1200m looks too short and Poly form a query. 20
2 YELLOW JADE HORSE ** Race form hopeless but very cheeky run expected with blinkers back on. 20
3 METTLESOME * Did it tough on pace last start from wide gate so appreciates the ace but like to see more before considering. 33
4 TASSAJARA ** Very disappointing at his last two starts but did look due prior and could show up with tongue-tie off. 12
5 GOLDEN MILE *** Form doesn't read well but gets blinkers back, a tongue-tie and Rodd so look for improvement. 6.00
6 HIGHLIGHT *** Drawn wide but more honest than most of these and should figure in the finish. 5.00
7 GOLDEN COIN *** Improved efforts at two starts this preparation and will make his presence felt late. 12
8 SUPER EIGHT *** Form better than most and gets his chance form good gate. 4.00
9 BIG REGARDS * Saddle did slip last start but yet to place in some 15 starts so take on trust. 20
10 FLYING MISSION * Just battling at the minute. 50
11 CASSIS OOLONG *** Has enough pace to make the running from wide gate and should look the winner at some stage. 5.00
12 BASTION ** Long-term maiden who was just fair (again) with support last start so have to take on trust. 9.00
13 HEPHAESTUS * Struggles as a rule and wide gate doesn't help. 50
14 SHUYING XIAOXIAO * Reassess over longer. 50
Race 6
While the top weight and likely favourite, CAPTAIN JAMIE, looks the horse to beat in this Class 4 over 1700m, the field has depth and there should be value galore for canny punters. HEE'S A MAVERICK and KHUDAWAND both come off eye-catching runs after wins at their respective previous starts and the pair can win without surprising - hopefully at each-way odds. Too many others with winning hopes to mention but the likes of AMAZING MAN, SHOWAR, BILLY BRITAIN and DANGER ZONE all could sneak out to good value so are well worth a look. But CAPTAIN JAMIE is the one they have to beat. The 3YO does need to show he is up to carry weight in this Company after being disappointing last start but he should enjoy the Poly and a recent trial suggests he can bounce back. Betting Strategy - look for value, KHUDAWAND each-way.
1 CAPTAIN JAMIE *** Very disappointing last start but has trialled well since. Can bounce back at first start on the Poly. 3.00
2 SHOWAR *** Did it tough last start so effort to the wire good and worth another look with handy claim and winkers added. 12
3 BILLY BRITAIN *** No one catching the winner last start but ran on well enough to follow in a race that suits. 8.00
4 HEE'S A MAVERICK *** Never involved before very good work late last start and more than handles the Poly so can win. 12
5 KHUDAWAND *** Backed up dead-heat first win with an eye-catching placing in similar affair to this and must be respected. 6.00
6 ARR FLAIR *** Did it very tough last start so effort was solid and ways worth an each-way look. 12
7 FALKIRK LEAD ** Honest and last start over this trip solid enough to include in exotics at odds. 20
8 BIG BANKER *** Beaten a long way into second last start but winner did break a record so gets his chance here. 8.00
9 AMAZING MAN *** Doesn't win out of turn but in form and loves the Poly so gets his chance. 12
10 GALLANT HEIGHTS ** Needs Class 5 as a rule but step up to his best trip suggests he could pinch place at odds. 33
11 DANGER ZONE *** Another that came through the record breaking Black Swan race right in this. 8.00
12 SUN HANCOCK * Desperate for Class 5. 100
Race 7
The EW Barker night is always a good one and the race itself rarely disappoints. But bar a couple of anomalies - most notably WORLD AIRLINES with 58.5kg in 2007 - the winner usually carries closer to the minimum and that's where our form lines will lead. ARAMCO will appreciate 53kg after a disappointing run in the Racing Guide Classic and should be flying late in a race that suits. Going with him late will most likely be the in-form veteran GOLDEN CURL who looks equally well weighted with 52.5kg with D David up. On the minimum is a last start Poly winner with some hope in POLE PARADISE. The 7YO broke a track record on that occasion but has won on the turf and should give a sight. Plenty of others to consider including FORTUNE WINNER, MR FANTASTIC and NOVA STRIKE to name just three. Betting Strategy - 6, 7, 9, 10 and 12 in a trifecta.
1 POSEIDON ** Won well enough last start in the Racing Guide Classic but 58kg looks a big ask in this field. 12
2 MR SPIELBERG ** Resuming. More than handy stayer who will work home strongly but will need longer. 20
3 TWICKENHAM ** Was on the minimum when winning the Committee's Prize (again) over the mile and could be tested with 55kg. 12
4 BEST TOTHELIGN ** Enjoyed a nice run when placing in the Committee's Prize and drops 3kg for the effort. Can figure. 12
5 NOVA STRIKE ** Finds it hard to win at this level but 1400m suits and will appreciate handicap conditions. 20
6 MR FANTASTIC ** Drawn wide but very honest and just missed in the Committee's Prize. In the mix. 6.00
7 ARAMCO *** Disappointing when stopping on his run in the Racing Guide Classic but drops 4kg and gets his chance. 5.00
8 AFFLECK ** Has been mixing his form but showed enough at his last start and subsequent trial to keep safe with winkers on and 52.5kg to carry. 12
9 GOLDEN CURL *** In form, trip suits and will be flying late with what looks a winnable weight. 6.00
10 FORTUNE WINNER ** Disappointing in the Racing Guide Classic but better than that and will be running on strongly with 50.5kg. 20
11 WHITE HUNTER ** Very disappointing last start but can lead and give a sight with no weight. 20
12 POLE PARADISE *** Broke track record on the Poly last start and has won on the turf this trip so pay to keep safe on the minimum. 12
13 CLARTON SUPER ** Returned not striding when just fair as favourite last start with heavy weight so worth another look. 9.00
14 CERTAINLY ** Won in easier Company at long odds last start but will be running on late. 33
Race 8
An absolute cracker of a BM83 Poly sprint over 1100m and while some of the fancies will need luck from wide gates, the majority of the field could win without surprising. A couple of very progressive types down the weights in AL GREEN and LIM'S SHOT appeal. AL GREEN in particular has shown a real liking for the Poly and his last start on the all-weather behind POLE PARADISE was excellent and hard to beat on that effort. LIM’S SHOT has grown a leg since blinkers went on and should also figure heavily in this finish. GRAND CROSS set a record breaking (Pole Paradise) pace last start and expect much the same here and that should suit the swooper in GOLDEN TOMAHAWK who wins again soon. AWESOME, CONSTANT PARADISE, MIGHTY CONQUEROR, ELITE STAR and the emergency, KRATOS, all can also win. Tough race. Betting Strategy - AL GREEN win.
1 GOAL KEEPER * Veteran resuming after very long break and hadn't won for a long time prior to that. No. 50
2 ECLAIR CHOICE ** Improved effort last start and could give a sight from the ace. 33
3 GRAND CROSS *** Resuming with solid on-pace effort that set up record-breaking win and in this a very long way. 8.00
4 CONSTANT JUSTICE *** Was favourite two starts back in similar affair when he battled on very well after tough run. Can win with luck from gate. 8.00
5 AWESOME *** Showed last start why always has to be respected on the Poly and pay to keep safe again. 12
6 MIGHTY CONQUEROR *** Did it very tough last start so excuses for poor effort and can win with more luck from bad gate. 8.00
7 PIONEER SEVEN ** Mixing his form but showed enough last start to follow at odds in what is easier Company. 33
8 ELITE STAR *** Wide gate a concern but hard to fault winning form so keep safe. 12
9 LIGHTNING FAST * Appreciates first up run but like to see more before considering. 100
10 AL GREEN *** Progressive type who enjoys the Poly and hard to beat from gate 4 on what he showed two starts back. 3.00
11 LIM'S SHOT *** Hard to fault form since blinkers went on and wins this without surprising. 5.00
12 GOLDEN TOMAHAWK *** Will not win out of turn but enough pace in this race to think he gets his chance late. 8.00
13 KRATOS *** Very progressive Poly sprinter who would give this a shake. 6.00
Race 9
It's rare to get three wins on the trot in the same grade but SILKINO gets a chance to do just that in this Poly Class 4 sprint. The 4YO broke his maiden status after an improved effort when blinkers were added to his gear and backed that up with another impressive performance. Yes, he has to carry an extra 4.5kg from a wide gate, but with a couple of the other fancies also drawn wide, he can win. The two others that will need luck from the wide gate are MAXIMUS resuming and MOKASTAR, but both are handy types who won their maidens on this surface so have to be respected. Of the others that can win, UNCLE LUCKY will appreciate a better gate while DECRETO might be a very good value option as he will make his presence felt late in a race that suits. Betting Strategy - DECRETO each-way.
1 REACH FOR THE SUN * Impossible on recent form but gets blinkers down in Class so could improve. 33
2 SILKINO *** Extra 4.5kg to carry from a wide gate but hard to fault form since blinkers added and hard to hold out. 3.00
3 SOLDADO ** Very disappointing at his last two starts but form prior good and gate 1 helps. 12
4 D'GREAT DANGER ** Showed pace before fading at his Singapore debut but appreciates the run and in this for a long way with tongue-tie removed. 8.00
5 MAXIMUS *** Resuming with smart trial under his belt. Has ability so keep very safe although wide gate a concern. 5.00
6 MOKASTAR *** Racing soundly in Novice company on turf. Won Maiden on the Poly and despite wide gate should be prominent. 5.00
7 UNCLE LUCKY *** Did it very tough from wide gate last start so happy to ignore as a big hope on form prior. 8.00
9 DECRETO *** Form better than it reads and will be all over them late if handy enough when things get serious. 12
10 RUM N RAISINS ** Never involved before running on well late last start and worth another look. 20
11 SILK ROUTE ** Will enjoy being back on the Poly but may need it easier to win. 33
12 HONGCHEN * Reassess in something easier over longer. 50
13 BARNBURGH LAD * Needs Class 5 over 1000m. 50
