HAPPY CONTENDER and GORGEOUS AGAIN bumped at the start. After this, HAPPY CONTENDER was shifted across behind runners.
From the outside barrier, KYRUS BOWSER was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
Approaching the 250 Metres, HAPPY CONTENDER was disappointed for running between ENSURING and MIGHTY BOY which shifted in.
Over the concluding stages, MIGHTY BOY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ENSURING (N Callan) which shifted out under pressure. N Callan was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
When questioned, C Y Ho stated that he was instructed to lead on JOLLY GENE as is usual. He said JOLLY GENE is one-paced and he was asked not to restrain the horse as it performs best when able to stride along and not have its stride broken. He said he was able to obtain the lead in the early stages, having to make very little use of JOLLY GENE to do so and the horse seemed to relax nicely in the lead. He said after passing the 1000 Metres JOLLY GENE commenced to travel more keenly and he attempted to steady the horse so that it would not invite other runners to challenge JOLLY GENE in the lead and also not to break the horse’s stride. He added, despite his efforts, JOLLY GENE continued to travel more keenly than he had hoped and consequently was then not able to finish off the race. A veterinary inspection of JOLLY GENE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
When questioned regarding the performance of the winner HAPPILABABY compared to that of its last number of starts, Trainer C S Shum stated that on all of those occasions the horse had pleased him in the lead up to the races, however, had not performed to his expectations. He said in those races the horse had appeared reluctant to race and had wanted to hang in as it had done throughout the majority of its racing career in Hong Kong. He said HAPPILABABY also hung in in most of its track work and proved difficult to ride and that of all the jockeys who had ridden the horse, Z Purton, who rode HAPPILABABY this evening, had the best record and even in the horse’s track work, he had been able to get it relaxed and tractable. He said, given that Jockey Purton had ridden HAPPILABABY at its only two previous wins in Hong Kong, wherever possible, he had attempted to engage the services of Jockey Purton, however, for various reasons, he had not been able to secure him to ride the horse. He added that with Jockey Purton riding HAPPILABABY tonight and being up in distance, he anticipated that HAPPILABABY, given the manner in which it worked in the lead up to the race including in a barrier trial when ridden by Jockey Purton, would race well and he advised the connections accordingly. Mr Shum was advised that whilst the Stewards acknowledged the good record of Z Purton on HAPPILABABY, nonetheless it is important for horses to race in a consistent manner.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of GORGEOUS AGAIN, N Rawiller stated that he had ridden the horse in the lead up to tonight’s race on both the All Weather surface and turf and the horse’s work, particularly on the All Weather surface, had been good. He said tonight’s race was run at an even tempo throughout, rather than in a stop-start manner which he felt would suit GORGEOUS AGAIN. He said however that his mount came under pressure as far out as the 700 Metres and then, after being hard ridden from the 500 Metres, did not quicken as he expected and stayed on one-paced for a short distance before giving ground noticeably. He added the manner in which the horse worked on the All Weather Track compared to tonight’s performance indicated to him that whilst GORGEOUS AGAIN had previously raced well on a track rated "Good to Firm”, the horse may not have appreciated tonight’s surface which, in his opinion, was firmer than it had been this season. Trainer C S Shum stated that whilst GORGEOUS AGAIN had disappointed him in tonight’s race, he felt that being ridden in a more forward position, up in distance tonight and without cover in what eventuated to be a solidly run race may not have suited the horse. He said accordingly, it is his intention to return the horse to Sha Tin if a suitable race is able to be found as GORGEOUS AGAIN had previously raced well at that course and, if possible, to have it ridden more quietly. A veterinary inspection of GORGEOUS AGAIN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. The performance of GORGEOUS AGAIN, a favourite for tonight’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, GORGEOUS AGAIN will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
GORGEOUS AGAIN, HAPPILABABY and ENSURING were sent for sampling.

After travelling a short distance, CASA MASTER was steadied away from the heels of AUTUMN GOLD after being bumped by that horse which shifted in.
When being steadied approaching and passing the winning post on the first occasion, SAVANNAH WIND got its head up and travelled keenly.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion, THE JAZZ got its head up on a number of occasions.
For some distance approaching the 1200 Metres, GLENEALY PRIZE got its head up when awkwardly placed behind AUTUMN GOLD and then passing the 1200 Metres was allowed to improve its position to race outside the lead.
After the race, M Chadwick (KING BOUNTIFUL) reported that it had been his intention to improve to the outside of GLENEALY PRIZE into clear running between that horse and AUTUMN GOLD early in the Straight, however, when AUTUMN GOLD shifted back in, he was obliged to alter course to the inside of GLENEALY PRIZE to obtain clear running passing the 250 Metres.
When questioned regarding the performance of PREMIUM CHAMPION, Z Purton stated that whilst the horse’s failure to run on in the Straight was disappointing, he felt that there were some reasons for the horse not being able to perform as anticipated. He said after having to race towards the tail of the field, he was obliged to shift out from behind SAVANNAH WIND near the 550 Metres to follow HAPPY ROCKY into the race. He said when he did this, this allowed KING BOUNTIFUL, which had previously raced to the inside of PREMIUM CHAMPION, to obtain inside runs whereas PREMIUM CHAMPION was obliged to cover ground. He added he had to make the Home Turn very wide after shifting to the outside of HAPPY ROCKY and after this the horse did not finish off the race as it had previously when ridden by him. A veterinary inspection of PREMIUM CHAMPION immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CLOUD NINE and THE JAZZ were sent for sampling.
Race: 4 (140) OUR PEGASUS HANDICAP Class 4 1000 m
Trainer J Moore was fined the sum of $3,000 for presenting RICHCITY FORTUNE in the Parade Ring without a ring tongue bit which was part of its declared gear. This necessitated RICHCITY FORTUNE having to return to the saddling area to have the correct bit fitted.

Making the first turn passing the 600 Metres, DR RACE was momentarily crowded for room between DON’T MISS and NOBLE DE BOY which shifted in marginally. After this, DON’T MISS got its head up and shifted out towards the heels of JUNZI which resulted in DR RACE again being crowded for room.
Passing the 300 Metres, ELEGANCE PROMISE was bumped by JUNZI which shifted out to obtain clear running.
Passing the 100 Metres, DR RACE and DON’T MISS raced tight.
Throughout the race, SPARKLING TALENT travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned regarding the performance of NOBLE DE BOY, N Rawiller stated that after being shifted across behind runners in the early stages from a wide barrier, NOBLE DE BOY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SPARKLING TALENT near the 600 Metres when that horse was being steadied in an attempt to obtain a trailing position with cover. He said he had previously formed the opinion that NOBLE DE BOY is better suited by being able to race without its momentum being checked which is why the horse was racing over 1000 Metres tonight as those races are generally run at such a tempo that NOBLE DE BOY had been able to enjoy a trouble-free run. He said after having its momentum interrupted near the 600 Metres, NOBLE DE BOY then responded only fairly after this. A veterinary inspection of NOBLE DE BOY immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer” which had previously been reported.
A veterinary inspection of RICHCITY FORTUNE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SPEEDY KING and PEACE COMBINATION were sent for sampling.

C Y Ho was reprimanded. In this incident, NUMERO UNO, which was following HAPPY FIERY DRAGON, was inconvenienced in consequence.
Passing the 800 Metres, MULTIGOGO was shifted out away from the heels of LOOK ERAS which shifted away from the heels of EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE after that horse crossed to the rail. In this incident, MULTIGOGO became unbalanced and lost ground, resulting in BOND ELEGANCE, which was following, being steadied away from the heels of that horse in consequence. HAPPY FIERY DRAGON, which was following BOND ELEGANCE and travelling keenly, was checked away from the heels of that horse, resulting in NUMERO UNO and PLANET STAR, which were following, also being hampered. After this, HAPPY FIERY DRAGON continued to travel keenly and shifted out away from the heels of BOND ELEGANCE.
After the 700 Metres, MULTIGOGO was taken wider by LOOK ERAS which shifted out away from the heels of EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE.
Approaching the Home Turn, NUMERO UNO was awkwardly placed close to the heels of BOND ELEGANCE.
After being shifted to the inside of BOND ELEGANCE near the 300 Metres in an attempt to improve between that horse and NUMERO UNO, PLANET STAR was then held up for clear running between those horses as a result of NUMERO UNO shifting out. After BOND ELEGANCE shifted out approaching the 200 Metres, PLANET STAR was again ridden along to improve between BOND ELEGANCE and NUMERO UNO, however, approaching the 150 Metres was steadied when disappointed for running as a result of NUMERO UNO shifting out.
Over the final 100 Metres, MANFUL STAR had difficulty obtaining clear running when unable to improve between EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE and LOOK ERAS and consequently was not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race.
Over the concluding stages, HAPPY HAPPY was awkwardly placed inside the heels of MULTIGOGO which shifted in marginally under pressure and consequently was not able to be properly tested.
For the majority of the race, CORRE RAPIDO travelled wide and without cover.

MANFUL STAR, LOOK ERAS and EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE were sent for sampling.
Race: 6 (142) FLYING ELITE HANDICAP Class 4 1650 m
OUR HERO was bumped shortly after the start by EXCELLENCE which shifted in.
From wide barriers, UNIQUE JOYOUS, SPEEDY WALLY and NEVER BETTER were steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
When being steadied to obtain cover approaching the winning post on the first occasion, SPEEDY WALLY got its head up and raced ungenerously and then passing the winning post on the first occasion got its head on the side and shifted in, resulting in UNIQUE JOYOUS being crowded for room outside CITY WINNER.
Passing the 1300 Metres, MUTUAL JOY commenced to race ungenerously and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of UNIQUE HAPPIEST which was being steadied to allow WORKS OF ART to cross.
In the early part of the Straight, SPEEDY WALLY lay in under pressure.
Near the 50 Metres, WORKS OF ART was awkwardly placed inside the heels of GENEROUS BOBO.
Passing the 50 Metres, NEVER BETTER raced in restricted room between OUR HERO which shifted out under pressure and SPEEDY WALLY which was laying in. Z Purton stopped riding SPEEDY WALLY with the whip and directed that horse out to alleviate the tightening to NEVER BETTER, however, SPEEDY WALLY was ridden out hands and heels to the end of the race.
When questioned, Apprentice H N Wong stated that he was asked to attempt to lead on UNIQUE HAPPIEST, however, if the rider of another runner was intent on leading, he should not engage in a speed battle with that horse, rather he should obtain a trailing position behind it. He said after riding his mount positively in the early stages to obtain the lead passing the winning post on the first occasion, both WORKS OF ART and, from a wider barrier, GENEROUS BOBO were being ridden along to obtain a forward position. He said as he considered that WORKS OF ART, principally would continue on into the lead, he elected to steady UNIQUE HAPPIEST approaching the 1300 Metres to allow WORKS OF ART to cross. He said although the tempo of the race at this time was not strong, he believed that WORKS OF ART would continue on irrespective and he felt at the time that it was in the best interests of UNIQUE HAPPIEST not to continue to persist in the position inside WORKS OF ART. He said however that, on reflection, he believed it might have been better for UNIQUE HAPPIEST to have maintained its position without having to be ridden along rather than allowing WORKS OF ART to cross at this stage of the race as this resulted in WORKS OF ART being able to steady the tempo in front sooner than might have otherwise been the case. Trainer K W Lui confirmed the instructions given to Apprentice Wong. He said as he believed that WORKS OF ART was going to continue into the lead regardless of the manner in which Apprentice Wong rode UNIQUE HAPPIEST, he was comfortable with Apprentice Wong’s decision to hand up the lead at this time of the race. Apprentice Wong was advised that his explanation would be reported, however, the Stewards advised him that they concurred with his view subsequent that he should have allowed UNIQUE HAPPIEST to continue to race inside WORKS OF ART for longer than he did without riding the horse along given the tempo of the race to more accurately gauge whether WORKS OF ART would cross into the lead or remain racing to the outside of UNIQUE HAPPIEST.
A veterinary inspection of CITY WINNER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
HAPPY AND HEALTHY and UNIQUE HAPPIEST were sent for sampling.
Race: 7 (143) DORDENMA HANDICAP Class 3 1650 m

SWOT WINDICATOR shifted in at the start and bumped ART OF RAW.
Shortly after the start, GO BEAUTY GO (T Berry) was steadied when crowded for room between MIGHTY MAVERICK and MISTER MONTE which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. After the race, T Berry reported that it had been intended for GO BEAUTY GO to be ridden in a forward position, however, after losing ground in this incident, he elected to shift GO BEAUTY GO across behind runners to obtain cover.
Despite being ridden along in the early stages, MISTER MONTE failed to show early speed and approaching the winning post on the first occasion was steadied in order to obtain a position with cover, however, was left racing wide and without cover. After the 1100 Metres, MISTER MONTE was allowed to improve into a more forward position, however, continued to travel wide and without cover.
In the early stages, LUCKY GIRL was steadied to obtain cover.
For some distance passing the winning post on the first occasion, MASTER GOLD proved very difficult to settle and got its head up on a number of occasions when being checked away from the heels of TRAVEL DATUK. Then approaching the 1100 Metres, MASTER GOLD was checked away from the heels of TRAVEL DATUK which was awkwardly placed close to the heels of LOTUS BREEZE. ART OF RAW, which was following MASTER GOLD, was inconvenienced in consequence.
LUCKY GIRL got its head up when travelling keenly after the 1200 Metres.
Shortly after entering the Straight, WINWIN RUBY and ART OF RAW bumped.
Approaching the 200 Metres, WINWIN RUBY raced tight between ART OF RAW and SWOT WINDICATOR.
Near the 150 Metres, MIGHTY MAVERICK was momentarily steadied away from the heels of GO BEAUTY GO which shifted in. A short distance later, LUCKY GIRL, which was closing off the race strongly, was shifted out away from the heels of BANK ON RED after being awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse. T Berry was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he makes every endeavour to keep his mounts on a straight course.
Near the 150 Metres, ART OF RAW was shifted to the inside of LOTUS BREEZE in an attempt to obtain clear running after being unable to shift to the outside of that horse due to WINWIN RUBY racing to the outside of ART OF RAW. For a short distance after this, ART OF RAW had some difficulty obtaining clear running between LOTUS BREEZE and TRAVEL DATUK.
Close to the finishing line, SWOT WINDICATOR was shifted out away from the heels of WINWIN RUBY.
A veterinary inspection of WINNER RUBY immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right hind leg. Before being allowed to race again, WINWIN RUBY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

VERY RICH MAN was withdrawn on 23.10.17 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (injury to right knee) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter BACK IN BLACK. Before being allowed to race again, VERY RICH MAN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
NAVAS was crowded for room on jumping between BACK IN BLACK and GRACE HEART which was taken in by SO FAST. A short distance after this, NAVAS was checked between GRACE HEART and BACK IN BLACK which was taken out by HAPPY HAPPY STAR (C Y Ho) which shifted out when being ridden along. C Y Ho was reprimanded.
From a wide barrier, HAIR TRIGGER was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Making the turn near the 1000 Metres, IRON BOY raced tight inside STARLIGHT which got its head on the side and shifted in away from GOOD COMPANION (M Chadwick) which shifted in. A short distance later, IRON BOY was checked when crowded for room inside STARLIGHT which was in turn racing tight inside GOOD COMPANION which, after initially shifting in, was then racing tight inside the heels of MASTER VIKING. M Chadwick was advised that whilst there was not sufficient evidence for the Stewards to proceed with a charge of having breached the careless riding Rule, nonetheless, in the opinion of the Stewards, it was predominantly the shift inwards from GOOD COMPANION which had caused the crowding to IRON BOY, therefore he was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he leaves comfortable racing room for runners to his inside in similar circumstances.
Near the 750 Metres, MASTER VIKING was bumped by SO FAST which shifted out.
Passing the 250 Metres, NAVAS was steadied when disappointed for running inside IRON BOY. NAVAS was then shifted to the outside of IRON BOY passing the 200 Metres.
BACK IN BLACK was unable to obtain clear running until approaching the 200 Metres.
Passing the 100 Metres, HAPPY HAPPY STAR, which was giving ground, was steadied away from the heels of GOOD COMPANION which was taken out by MASTER VIKING.
Close to the finishing line, NAVAS, which was finishing off the race strongly, was severely checked away from the heels of SO FAST (Apprentice H N Wong) which shifted in under pressure. As the Stewards were satisfied that NAVAS had not established running to the inside of SO FAST prior to that horse shifting ground, no further action was taken other than Apprentice Wong was severely reprimanded and told that in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount rather than allowing it to shift ground under pressure.
Throughout the race, HAPPY HAPPY STAR travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground.
A veterinary inspection of GOOD COMPANION and HAPPY HAPPY STAR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
STARLIGHT and G-ONE LOVER were sent for sampling.
